City Connection: Mayor urges 100 percent Census particpation

In comments at Tuesday night’s POA Board meeting and again at the City Council meeting Wednesday, Mayor Nancy Horton emphasized how important it is for residents to respond to the 2010 Census that will arrive in the mail this month.
“It is important for every resident of Canyon Lake to be counted,” says Nancy. “When I moved to Canyon Lake, there were 600 vacant lots. There are now 300. So we have 300 new residences and many more residents. The count will help finance schools, roads, transportation, cities and many other public entities.”
“More importantly, the Southwest Riverside County region has experienced tremendous growth in the last 10 years,” the mayor adds. “We may end up with a new district for State Assembly and Senate. Our current assembly district reaches to the Palm Springs, so representation in government is another good reason to fill out the census form and return it by mail.”
Nancy reminded residents approximately nine people have experienced theft from the outgoing slots of their cluster mailboxes so it is better to put mail in the official USPS mailboxes at the Main Gate, East Gate or in the Towne Center. Even when using those mailboxes, it’s safer to deposit mail before pick-up times, rather than leaving mail in the boxes overnight when they are vulnerable to theft, Nancy says.
The mayor reminded residents the City of Canyon Lake will officially turn 20 on December 1, 2010 but the City plans to hold events every month until the big day. One of the events will include a book signing by Canyon Lake pioneer Elinor Martin for her book, “Images of America: Canyon Lake.”
Nancy asks that anyone with City memorabilia bring it to City Hall so that the display case can reflect the history of the City. Those who would like a 20th birthday pin can pick one up at City Hall.
In other business at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting, the City Council approved several resolutions, along with the contract for traffic engineering services for the widening of Railroad Canyon Rd. and the Waiver of Public Use Permits fee by Canyon Lake Community Church to create a preschool at the church.
The City Council also discussed the possiblity of implementing an Emergency Medical Services Prescription Program in Canyon Lake and approved a company to do the Fee Study.
A public hearing was held for an appeal regarding the firewall requirement for construction on the burned building in the Towne Center. The City Council reconvened in its capacity as the Building Code Appeals Board. The results of the appeal are below.
