Alex thanks all those who braved the chilly temperatures to come in time for the pancake breakfast, a fundraiser partially sponsored by the local Costco. After breakfast, 365 uniformed players lined up by teams as the color guard from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar marched onto the field, while American Idol contestant Tori Kelly sang the National Anthem. The color guard presented an American flag that had been flown in Iraq and donated to CLLL by Master Sergeant Tommy Patillo, a manager for one of the teams. Tommy has served three tours in Iraq. After the National Anthem and flag-raising ceremony, the Canyon Lake Cheer Team took to the field to pump up the festivities. They remained throughout the day to cheer for the various teams that played. For the first pitch ceremony this year, Alex says CLLL wanted to recognize City Councilman and local businessman Marty Gibson. “Marty has never turned away Little League or any youth organization in our community that needs help,” says Alex. “In the last 10 years or so he could be seen running the grill at the snack bar or just cheering on the kids. He has a heart of gold and loves baseball.” Marty brought his own catcher, fellow Councilman Jordan Ehrenkratz. Also during the ceremonies, the players were greeted by “Thunder,” the Lake Elsinore Storm Mascot. After the celebration, games began, with a couple completed before the rains came, according to Alex. In the AAA division, the Thunder defeated the Cardinals 7-2, with starter Daniel Camili-Howell pitching four innings of no-hit baseball. In the Junior division, the Red Sox defeated the Dodgers 12-0, while Jacob Zinda hit a home run measured at 350 feet. “Canyon Lake Little League wants to thank all those who made this day perfect, and every parent in this community who helps make this a special place for our kids,” says Alex. “Come out this Saturday to watch more exciting baseball, and don’t forget to come by the snack bar and get yourself some popcorn and crackerjacks!” |
