At risk are millions of dollars in federal funds that build roads, schools, hospitals, libraries and senior centers, according to City Manager Lori Moss, who says, “It is estimated that Riverside County stands to lose $20,000 over a 10-year period for each person not counted in the 2010 Census.” “All the residents in Canyon Lake are in this together,” says Mayor Nancy Horton, chairman of the Complete Count Committee. “We all need to stand up and be counted.” With census questionnaires going out in the mail this month to the 11,000 residents of Canyon Lake, committee members agreed now is the time to get the message out about the importance of the 2010 Census. The 10-question questionnaire, which is completely confidential, takes only a few minutes to fill out. Nancy told members of the Complete Count Committee that census awareness signs are now up at the three gates of Canyon Lake, thanks to Canyon Lake Community Church. Announcements have been made at the Canyon Lake City Council meetings and Property Owners Association meetings and a census article was included in a newsletter put out by the Lake Elsinore Unified School District, which includes Canyon Lake. Ron Hewison, executive director of H.O.P.E., says a bilingual representative from the U.S. Census Bureau was present to answer questions and allay fears at the food bank’s February 13 distribution to about 500 needy families. That group included about 30 “hard to counts” from Canyon Lake, he says. The city manager says Code Red calls will be made in March and April to about 2,000 Canyon Lake families. Census Bureau representative Ron Williams says his agency should know by mid-April how many Canyon Lake residents responded to the initial questionnaire. Households that did not respond will receive another questionnaire request by mail and up to three in-person visits from Census Bureau personnel to gather the information. Nancy received assurances from Canyon Lake POA that certified census workers would be allowed access through the gates to Canyon Lake, which is home to about 500 families who are in town only on weekends.
