Happy 4th of July!

Ever wonder what it's like to be a patrol officer on the 4th July in Canyon Lake? At top, Marine Patrol Officer Jim Scott received a friendly and enthusiastic response when he pointed his camera at these merry-makers on a recent weekend while he was on patrol. He says people generally are nice when you're nice to them. Since the population of Canyon Lake just about triples during the 4th of July weekend, "being nice" is probably a good thing to remember as drivers make their way through long lines at the gates, guests fill up parking spaces in front of neighborhood parties, families vie for space in waterfront parks and boats make their way through busy waterways.

Have fun, be safe this 4th of July!
Canyon Lake is a proud, patriotic community that likes to celebrate the 4th of July with all manner of parties, barbecues and special events, causing the population to swell to 30,000 or more as residents share the magic of this “little bit of paradise” and its special brand of patriotism with friends and family.

Public invited to comment on Railroad Canyon Rd. widening
The City of Canyon Lake’s project to widen Railroad Canyon Rd. from four lanes to six continues to progress, with the City considering the adoption of a “mitigated negative declaration” for the improvement. The City is inviting public comment through July 23. A copy of the document will be available at City Hall for review after today, according to City Manager Lori Moss.

City Connection: CLPD offers tips to protect against crimes of opportunity
During the summer, most of us will enjoy the outdoors or take vacations away from home. Even as we relax, it’s important not to let our guard down and become victims of what is called a crime of opportunity. Simply put, crimes of opportunity include auto thefts and burglaries in which property is made easily available to the criminal.

City Connection: Canyon Lake Crime Stats
Part I crimes increased 120 percent over the past two weeks in Canyon Lake, from five to 11. The increase was mainly dues to seven theft cases throughout the area, up from only one the prior two weeks. Two of the theft cases involved family members as suspects, while other theft cases included golf clubs taken from a location on San Joaquin, theft of a stereo system from a boat on Lighthouse and a license plate taken from a trailer on Lassen.

City Connection: AFV director discusses enforcement issues
Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV) is the agency that handles animal control services for Canyon Lake. From time to time, we feel it is important to let the public know about problems and enforcement issues we encounter in the field. Here are a few of our latest concerns:

City Connection: News and Notes
The Canyon Lake City Council will hold an adjourned regular meeting next Thursday, July 9 at 3 p.m. in the Municipal Services (POA) Boardroom for the purpose of further consideration of the redevelopment plan, including various resolutions certifying the final EIR, finding that the provision of low- and moderate income housing outside the project area will be of benefit to the project area and responding to any written objections to the proposed redevelopment plan.

City Connection: Library says thanks to its 'Friends'
Friends of the Library board members were treated to a surprise party by Library patrons and the appreciative kids who enjoy the various family programs and story times held throughout the year. After they presented a cake, the children gave each board member a hand-drawn thank you card as well as a bouquet of flowers.

Chamber Notes: Tourney raises more than $6,000 for Jr. Golf
The Chamber of Commerce’s 12th annual Ray Chenette Golf Tournament was a success, according to tournament chairman Paul Chenette, who says the event raised in excess of $6,000 for August’s Canyon Lake Jr. Golf Clinic.

Arts and Entertainment
Hosted by the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce and the City of Canyon Lake, the 4th annual Canyon Lake Community Night at the Storm Stadium will be held Saturday, July 18. According to the Chamber, the event, sponsored by RAS Financial, Costco, Canyon Lake Country Club, Ken and Dorothy Cable and Pepe’s, will be a fun evening for the community with good food, good seats and a good game against the Stockton Ports.

Three cheers for the red, white and blue
If there is one thing that can be said about Canyon Lake it’s that there are a lot of people here who are proud to be American. From the Fiesta Day Parade honoring active and retired military personnel, to the Fine Arts Guild concert with its big show of red, white and blue, to plans the City of Canyon Lake has to honor veterans next fall, people here are not paltry about patriotism.

Fly American flag proudly this weekend
As the nation celebrates its birthday, Canyon Lakers are encouraged to fly their flags proudly. The following are customs and rules pertaining to flying the flag:

Poem: 'I watched the flag pass by one day'
I watched the flag pass by one day, it fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease.

Spotlight on Seniors: Aubrey Zenteno
For Aubrey Zenteno, attaining the highest levels of achievement is important not only academically but spiritually as well. The Elsinore High School valedictorian is thankful for the support system she has through her church, school and family. She says, with their support, she was in the Top 100 all four years, was a scholar athlete, captain of the varsity tennis team, played varsity tennis for three years and junior varsity during her freshman year.

Spotlight on Seniors: Daniel Basubas
Achieving the coveted status of valedictorian while also participating in school activities, athletics, community service and holding down a job is no small feat, but 2009 Temescal Canyon High School graduate and Titan school mascot, Daniel Basubas, had the initiative to do it all. The son of Ed and Peggy Basubas, Daniel has lived in Canyon Lake since the age of 6.

Spotlight on Seniors
The Friday Flyer is celebrating the accomplishments of outstanding Canyon Lake seniors who have graduated from local schools this month. The Friday Flyer does not automatically receive notices of Canyon Lake students’ accomplishments in local schools. Parents are invited to contact The Friday Flyer regarding the accomplishments of their children.

Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'My Sister's Keeper'
Far from being the feel good movie of the year, “My Sister’s Keeper” is an intelligent and thought-provoking melodrama. It is a certified three hanky weeper that addresses a dreadfully difficult topic that is equally difficult to watch. Based on the Jodi Picoult novel, it is heart wrenching, heart warming and did we already say heart wrenching?

It's Miller Time: It's deja vu at the Miller house with 'Flood of 2009'
I sometimes think there’s a little black rain cloud hanging over my house; but before I get ahead of myself, let me tell you this tale of woe from the beginning.

Notes From a Road Once Taken: A Roman quest leads to treasures in history
“All roads lead to Rome.” Long ago, when the Roman Empire ruled much of the rule-able world, this was true; the phrase defined the might and majesty of the Roman Imperium. Now, the Appian Way exists in small, preserved segments, much like the American Mother Road, Route 66, does today and the phrase has come to mean that there are more ways than one to accomplish an objective.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Helping Jay Leno say goodbye
The last Tonight Show program with host Jay Leno aired on Friday, May 29. Two Canyon Lake couples, Mike and Betty Cannavino and Sam and Joyce Theodora, carrying a copy of The Friday Flyer, were fortunate enough to attend the show’s memorable taping as Jay Leno said goodbye to his viewers to a resounding standing ovation.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Tunnel vision
David LeClaire holds up The Friday Flyer at the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and pedestrian tunnel from O’Shaughnessy Dam to Wapama and Tueealala Falls in Yosemite’s back country.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: 'Bucket list'
The four members of the “Canyon Lake Bucket List,” Jim Magill, Dick Fusco, Tad Barclay, and Jim Fossum, just returned from their first adventure – a golf trip to Idaho. They are pictured with The Friday Flyer at the Coeur D’Alene Resort Golf Course, home of the famous floating island green, seen in the background.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Alaska cruise
Gene and Carol Ferrieri and Tink and Eileen Hultz traveled in June to Icy Strait Point in Hoonah, Alaska via the Celebrity Millennium cruise ship to celebrate the Ferrieris’ 40th wedding anniversary.

Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Baltic birthday bash
George Graef, Renate Pietsch of Treasure Island and Leo and Anita Mayer, Canyon Lake property owners, stand in front of Katherine’s Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, while on a 12-day Baltic cruise on the Jewel of the Seas.

Announcement: Linscott/Valdez engagement
Dan and Michele Linscott of Oceanside, California, are please to announce the engagement of their daughter, Krystal Michele Linscott, to Isaiah Gerald Valdez of Ogden, Utah.

Announcement: Bria Noelle Hofmann
Chris and Crystal Hofmann welcomed a new baby daughter, Bria Noelle Hofmann, to their family on June 6, 2009. They brought her home to Canyon Lake where her proud big sister, Jenna Reese Hofmann, 3, welcomed her new little sister, who weighed 7 lbs., 11 oz. and was 19 in. long at birth.

Ashleigh Albrecht calls Murrieta home, but Canyon Lakers also can be proud of the young golfer whose parents, John and Patty Albrecht, own a vacation home here. The 2009 Murrieta Valley High School graduate recently qualified to play in the U.S. Women’s Open, to be held at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, July 9 to 12.

Canyon Lake resident Robert Scott of Hansen's Beverage Company and Monster drinks is pictured, along with his crew, with actress Linda Blair at her WorldHeart Foundation golf tournament, held June 27 at the Canyon Lake Country Club.

In Memoriam: Glennis Anderson
Former resident Glennis Anderson, 82, passed away on June 27.

Lettter: Tip hat to TWG
All too often we tend to take things for granted. It seems so easy to do that. Then, every once in a while, when we have time to stop and think about what’s going on around us, we have a chance to remember who is the one responsible.

Letter: Ski rules
It’s nice to post rules; its quite another to enforce them. Most Marine Patrol officers issue no citations other than expired Canyon Lake decals. The rule that pertains to no wake-enhancing devices is a joke. Every wake boat we see on the dock floats or trailers have wake-enhancing devices of some type.

Letter: Eastport upgrades
We all care about our Canyon Lake amenities, including the Eastport Park and launch ramp. After looking at the landscaping plan, published in the June 12 The Friday Flyer, it seems like more attention would have been given to making the area beautiful and pleasant to look at.

Letter: Tea Party
It has come to our attention that the Tea Party that was planned for July 4 at the Main Gate has been canceled. We are very sorry to read it was not approved by the Association. The reasons seem rather weak.

Letter: A distortion
An article in the paper’s June 26 issue attempts to cover the administrative hearing involving Marty Gibson and Pepe’s presentation of “Seduction: Exotic Men of Magic.” The article is obviously shortsighted and reports only one side of an issue affecting our community. It also significantly distorts the substance of the hearing.

Letter: Senior Potluck and Dance
We did it again! The Canyon Lake Senior Center was jumpin’ with intoxicating music and absolute frivolity last Sunday at the monthly potluck and dance. It was unimaginably better than last time! Oh . . . did we have fun!

Letter: WorldHeart fundraiser
On behalf of Linda Blair’s WorldHeart Foundation, we wish to thank all of the Canyon Lake businesses and individuals who made Saturday’s fundraiser a huge success. We raised more than $12,000 so that Linda can continue her work to care for rescued dogs.

Letter: Uplifting tournament
raising golf tournament, held this past weekend, was a lot of fun and very uplifting as the passion from this Hollywood actor, who starred in “The Exorcist,” was exhilarating as she displayed her devotion toward helping abandoned and abused dogs!

Adopt-a-Pet: Conner, Cassie and Bear
This week’s pets include Conner, a friendly 2-year-old white and tan neutered male beagle/husky mix, and Cassie, a cute 10-week-old gray and white female domestic shorthair. Also available is Bear, an adorable brown male chihuahua mix.
