News Briefs Bingo on Sunday The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo the first and third Sundays of each month at 1 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. The next Bingo will be Sunday, July 5. Bring a new guest and receive a $10 game card free. All proceeds are donated to a variety of charities. Holiday postal hours Pack, Wrap and Post will close at 1 p.m. today, July 3, in observance of Independence Day, and will be closed all day Saturday, July 4. Regular hours will resume on Monday July 6. There will be no regular mail delivery on July 4. Only Sunday/Holiday Premium Express Mail will be delivered. Regular mail delivery, retail services and collections will resume on Monday, July 6. Troop support Guaranty Bank is offering Canyon Lake residents an opportunity to show the troops they care by offering the “comforts of home.” USO2GO kits sponsored by Avon Cares will be offered for a $10 donation, which will provide five full-size products to the brave service men and women and will express gratitude for their service. For every kit, Avon will donate $4 to the USO. The kits will be available throughout July. Stop by Guaranty Bank to show the troops you care. Acting workshop Corky and Bobbie Pigeon will be holding their next free “On Camera Commercial, Acting and Modeling” workshop at Pepe’s Restaurant in the Towne Center on Saturday, July 11, at 1 p.m. The minimum age for children is 4. The free workshop is designed to introduce attendees to auditioning skills, what to wear to an audition, how to book a job and how to get representation, to name a few. The price is $10 and proceeds are donated to the many organizations supported by the Woman’s Club. Fishermen wanted Captains and boats are needed for the 5th annual C.A.S.T. at Lake Perris. Pontoon, bass and ski boats are welcome. The event will be held on Saturday, September 19, beginning at 6 a.m. The day of fishing pairs fishermen with a disabled/disadvantaged child between the age of 7 to 14 and their parent/guardian. Host families needed This year approximately 100 students from the countries of Germany, France, Russia and Spain are in need of host families and EF is hoping to place 30 of them in the Canyon Lake area. Students and chaperones will arrive July 8 and depart August 3. During weekday mornings, students will attend summer school in Murrieta. In the afternoon, students and chaperones will take field trips throughout Southern California. Host families are asked to provide transportation to and from the bus stop at the Canyon Lake Market or the school. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. and return around 5:30 p.m. EF Educational Homestay Programs offers an incentive to new host families. Local schools, clubs, charities and organizations can earn $25 for each new host family who hosts for the full 27 days. Program coordinators are available to speak at a meeting or are available for questions regarding the program. Welk Resort Theatre The Welk Resort Theatre is presenting Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” through August 30. Based on the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, the musical showcases a variety of styles of song and dance, including pop rock, country/western and calypso. Originally written as a pop cantata for performance in schools over 40 years, “Joseph” has become a word-wide fixture in the theater. Ticket prices for the show range from $29 to $47 for performances only and $35 to $63 if a buffet at the Canyon Grille is included. In addition, a special price for children 3 to 15 is offered for $10, which does not include a meal. Caregiver support group The Caregivers Connection support group for caregivers and their patients meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in rooms C5 and C6. Grief support groups The GriefShare recovery seminar and support group meets at Grace Church each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. The church is located at 29720 Goetz Rd. in Quail Valley. The seminar is led by Pastor Robert Butler and runs for 13 weeks. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this offer is invited to stop by Pack, Wrap and Post on Fridays; no appointment is necessary. Debby says she will offer the service as long as she is able to do so. Hospital volunteers needed Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. Kid sponsors needed Community Outreach Ministry invites sponsors to send children of prisoners, at-risk and needy kids to camp for a life-changing experience. The cost per child is $250 and includes food, lodging, transportation and activities. A five-day camp will be held during July at Sa-Ha-Le Lodge in Big Bear Lake. The family support group would meet once a month with activities such as cooking nights, movie nights, play dates and field trips in between meetings. According to Michelle Peters, it will give families the opportunity to share stories, laugh and cry together. The support group also would give siblings the opportunity to relate to each other and share their challenges. Clothing wanted A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are growing dramatically. Senior softball Softball players 55 and older are needed for a senior men’s league in Menifee. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Thank the troops Xerox Corporation has created a simple way for citizens to thank military personnel overseas at www.letssaythanks.com. The sender selects a design and message, which is then personalized with the sender’s name and town. Xerox then prints and sends a postcard to a member of the military stationed overseas. It only takes a few minutes to send a postcard and say thanks. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one thing. Corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. |
