Spotlight on Seniors: Daniel Basubas

Achieving the coveted status of valedictorian while also participating in school activities, athletics, community service and holding down a job is no small feat, but 2009 Temescal Canyon High School graduate and Titan school mascot, Daniel Basubas, had the initiative to do it all. The son of Ed and Peggy Basubas, Daniel has lived in Canyon Lake since the age of 6.
While a student, he received the Principal’s Golden Circle of Honor for Academic Excellence all four years. He also was a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and was a California Scholarship Federation (CSF) member.
Few roles at TCHS epitomize school spirit more than the role of Titan school mascot and Daniel donned the uniform for his senior year. Daniel was also involved in sports and played on the JV baseball team his freshman through junior years and was on the varsity cross-country team.
Daniel was a winner in numerous TCHS events. He was crowned Prom King his senior year. He put on a pair of tights for a TCHS talent show performance of “Men in Tights,” which he won along with Canyon Lake friends Kyle May, Kyle Collingwood and Steven Hiltz. He was also the 1st place winner of the TCHS Air Bands.
While keeping up with his other activities, Daniel attended Revival Christian Fellowship and worked as a busboy at Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, all while earning 150 hours of community service. His community involvement included Link Crew, Itty Bitty T-ball and tutoring, as well as other sports program booster activities.
The Titan mascot will become a Sun Devil fan when Daniel attends the University of Arizona. He received an academic scholarship under the Honors College Program. He says he is an undeclared major with the College of Science but is leaning towards Environmental Sciences.
