News Briefs Holiday hours The holidays have officially begun and residents will want to make note of the following holiday hours. The POA Member Services and City Hall will be closed today. Pack, Wrap and Post will be closed, beginning at noon on December 24, and will reopen on Monday, December 28. Due to Thanksgiving trash pick up will resume today. Following a holiday, CR&R trash pick-up for the remainder of the week will be one day later than the usual pick-up day. CR&R trash haulers will be closed Christmas Day, and will resume pick-up the following day. Angel Food Ministries Canyon Lake Community Church is the local distribution site for Angel Food Ministries, which offers families and seniors pre-ordered food at an affordable cost. Next month’s order deadline is December 7 at 3 p.m. For online ordering, the deadline is December 9 by 8:59 p.m. Distribution will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on December 19. Boating Safety Class The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary will present a boating safety class in Lake Elsinore on Sunday, December 6, at 8 a.m. The class is taught by Peter Dawson, Coxswain, USCGAUX, who is 100-ton certified and has 58 years of boating experience. The intense one-day class is a full eight hours and encompasses all the basics of safe boating. The class is recognized as meeting the requirements in all 50 states. The cost is $75. For reservations call 202-1584. Gift drive Several local businesses are supporting the non-profit agency, Victor Community Support Services, for a holiday gift drive for children. Beginning this weekend, gift tags for gift cards or gifts for the holiday season can be picked up at Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, Pack, Wrap & Post or BBVA Compass Bank (formerly Guaranty Bank). The gifts can be returned to the participating establishments by December 15. Gifts also can be mailed or returned unwrapped to VCSS, 31681 Riverside Dr., Suite L, Lake Elsinore, CA, 92530. International giving Those looking for that unique gift for the person who has everything may want to consider donating in their honor to the International Rescue Committee, which works with refugees and those uprooted by conflict and oppression. Items include mosquito nets, school for a year for an Afghan girl, winter coat, materials and a tool kit to rebuild a home, school supplies and emergency food kit just to name a few. Freedoms Foundation The Inland Empire Chapter of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge welcomes Dr. Dale Lacquement as its new chaplain. Dale is presently executive pastor at Faith Baptist Church of Moreno Valley. The chapter is looking for volunteers to chair positions on its board in Youth Education. Softball rummage sale The Temescal Canyon High School girls’ softball team will hold a rummage sale on December 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lowes parking lot at the Lake Elsinore Marketplace. The team is raising money to pay for tournaments, equipment, uniforms and more. The team also will hold a skills clinic for girls ages 5 to 14 on February 20, from 9 to noon. Acting workshop Corky and Bobbie Pigeon will hold a free “On Camera Commercial, Acting and Modeling” workshop upstairs at Pepe’s Restaurant in the Towne Center on Saturday, December 5, at 1 p.m. The free workshop is designed to introduce attendees to auditioning skills, what to wear to an audition, how to book a job and how to get representation, to name a few. Students who have attended the seminar and workshops have seen success. According to Corky, one student booked a national Subway commercial that recently aired during a Green Bay Packer game. A number of students have worked several times on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and a Canyon Laker had three callbacks for a Disney series. Care boxes for military The Ladies of the Lake group in Canyon Lake once again requests that residents provide the names of relatives serving in Iraq or Afghanistan who would like to receive a care box from the group. To provide a name, call Marilyn Felix at 244-5088. Lioness brownie jars The Canyon Lake Lioness Club once again is selling its world-famous holiday brownie mix. The jars are decorated for the holiday season and are available for a donation of $6 each or two for $10. They are appropriate for hostess, thank you or Christmas gifts. This project is part of the fundraising efforts by the club to help others less fortunate. Part of the income from this project will go to fund the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas basket projects of the club. Hand gel for troops The military troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan are experiencing a scarcity of water in the area, according to resident Irma Mascorro, who is an Avon representative. She is sponsoring two antibacterial hand gel products for donation to the troops, available for 99-cents each. Free bird photographs Through the month of November, Canyon Lake resident Bill Corbin is offering free 4x6 color prints of birds he has photographed in the community. Some the birds in his collection include the turkey vultures that roost in a tall tree near the intersection of Canyon Lake Dr. North and Vacation Dr. Bill has a gallery of framed photos at his business, Aerus Electrolux, in the East Gate Shopping Center, 24610 Railroad Canyon Rd. Ste 7-B. He invites residents to stop by for a visit from 9 a.m. to noon every day but Monday. Lake Perris boat parade Canyon Lake boaters who are planning to participate in Canyon Lake’s Parade of Lights on December 12 can have double the fun with their decorated “boat floats” if they enter them in the Lake Perris Holiday Boat Parade on December 5. Winning entries in that parade will receive Lake Perris park passes. There is free admission to the event for all contestants and anyone donating a small, unwrapped gift for a child valued at $10 or more (to be donated to a local charity). Michelle’s Place For the last two years, Michelle’s Place has provided holiday gifts for the families in its Pink Ribbon Assistance Program. These are families who have struggled financially this year because of the effects of undergoing breast cancer treatment. Organizers have 29 families they want to help this year but the program has been significantly impacted by the growing need from families and lack of funding. They need help with providing holiday gifts for the families. A Season’s Fair benefiting Michelle’s Place will be hosted at the Four Seasons clubhouse at 29750 Willow’s Ave. (just off Winchester in Murrieta) on December 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendors are still needed. Caregiver support group The Caregivers Connection support group is for caregivers and their patients and meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in rooms C5 and C6. Titan baseball fundraiser The Titan baseball booster club is selling Gold Canyon Candles, which are available from any Titans baseball player or by calling Joann Whiteley at 244-4180. The candles are a fundraiser and will be delivered in time for Christmas. New skiers website A new website, www.thirdtoski.com, created by resident Paul Queen is now available to help people find others with whom to waterski. Tastes of Paradise The Woman’s Club still has copies of its “Tastes of Paradise” cookbook available. Sponsors, volunteers needed Community Outreach Ministry of Wildomar is looking for sponsors and volunteers for its 8th annual Angel Tree Party on Sunday, December 18, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 33700 Mission Trail in Wildomar. Sponsors are sought for drop-off sites where people can select an Angel Tree tag and drop off the wrapped gift. A variety of volunteer positions are available for the event. Pet Preparedness The Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee is in need of donations of pet supplies to keep in storage in the event of a disaster affecting the community. If the need arises to open a Red Cross shelter, there will be a need to house Canyon Lake pets, too, according to CLEP Director Nancy Carroll. There is a need for wire enclosures, leashes, collars, food and water dishes and toys, as well as clean blankets and small bathroom type rugs for bedding. The event encourages friendly competition in a social setting and all games are played as foursomes in entrants’ homes. The Marathon starts in January 2010 and finishes by the end of May. Participants play a maximum of five times. An awards party will be held in June; date and place to be determined at a later date. Prizes are awarded in all divisions. All bridge players, including newcomers to Canyon Lake, are encouraged to find a partner and participate. The entry fee is $10 per person and registration is open until January 4. Operation Gratitude Those who knit and crochet are asked to create scarves and caps for the 2009 Operation Gratitude Holiday Drive. The scarves and hats are sent to service members deployed overseas. Last year, more than 10,000 items were sent and the organization hopes to send more this holiday season. A basic stitch with soft yarn and subtle colors are recommended. Due to packaging constraints, the scarves should measure five to seven inches across and be no more than 50 inches long. E-waste fundraiser The Elsinore High Dance Team has been invited to perform in the 2010 Orange Bowl half-time show. Grief support groups The GriefShare recovery seminar and support group meets at Grace Church each Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. The church is located at 29720 Goetz Rd. in Quail Valley. The seminar is led by Pastor Robert Butler and runs for 13 weeks. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief and recovery topics. Free Fax Friday Debby Gagnon of Pack, Wrap and Post in the Canyon Lake Towne Center says she would like to help those who are currently seeking employment during these tough economic times by offering free use of the fax machine for the purpose of sending out resumes. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this offer is invited to stop by Pack, Wrap and Post on Fridays; no appointment is necessary. Debby says she will offer the service as long as she is able to do so. Hospital volunteers needed Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies one as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. Clothing wanted A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are growing dramatically. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd. Special needs support A support group is forming for special needs children and their families. The family support group would meet once a month with activities such as cooking nights, movie nights, play dates and field trips in between meetings. According to Michelle Peters, it will give families the opportunity to share stories, laugh and cry together. The support group also would give siblings the opportunity to relate to each other and share their challenges. Senior softball Softball players 55 and older are needed for a senior men’s league in Menifee. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Thank the troops Xerox Corporation has created a simple way for citizens to thank military personnel overseas at www.letssaythanks.com. The sender selects a design and message, which is then personalized with the sender’s name and town. Xerox then prints and sends a postcard to a member of the military stationed overseas. It only takes a few minutes to send a postcard and say thanks. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one thing. Corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. |
