Holiday kick-offs

The Gary Bonner Singers' "Christmas Tidings" concert at the Lodge on Thursday will get the holidays off to a festive start. Pictured with two young fans at last year's Breakfast With Santa pancake feast, Santa Claus once again will be making the rounds at community events over the next two weeks, especially at two tree-lighting events scheduled next weekend.

Holiday events open with Thursday's concert

The next two weeks are busy ones in Canyon Lake, so residents will want to mark their calendars for the events they’re interested in attending. Several clubs and organizations have put a lot of effort into creating a festive holiday season, so residents may want to consider making this their year to become more “community minded.”
     • Helping everyone get into the timeless spirit of the holidays is the Gary Bonner Singers’ “Christmas Tidings” concert, presented by the Fine Arts Guild and the POA, next Thursday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge.
Over the years, audiences have thrilled to this ensemble’s traditional Christmas favorites such as “The First Noel,” “Winter Wonderland,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” “Oh Holy Night” and many more unforgettable carols. Tickets are on sale for $20 at the POA Member Services counter and also will be sold at the door.
     • Next Friday, December 4, Santa Claus will arrive at City Hall by fire truck for the Chamber of Commerce Tree Lighting Ceremony. The tree has been provided and decorated by the City of Canyon Lake. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with fun for the whole family, including a picture with Santa, candy canes, hot chocolate, cookies, wine tasting, entertainment and horse drawn carriage rides. Amato’s Restaurant will offer spaghetti dinner for a nominal fee.
     • Saturday, December 5, is the day Canyon Lake kids anticipate: Snow Day! Areas for snow play and sledding will be open from noon to 4 p.m. The YMCA will be on hand to sell treats. Sponsored by the POA, wristbands for a whole afternoon of play and unlimited rides down the slopes will be sold for $8.
     • On Sunday, December 6, adults will enjoy the Woman’s Club “Enchanted Christmas” Holiday Home Tour, which includes a boutique and opportunity drawing for decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces. The tour is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by the opportunity drawing at 3:30 at the Lodge. Visitors will be able to view five homes, each with its own theme. (For the list of homes, see Page A-10). The Lodge will open at 9 a.m. for guests to view the items in the drawing, as well as to visit the boutique featuring several vendors selling candles, jewelry, purses, shawls and Christmas decorations.
     • Also on Sunday, December 6, at the Lodge is the Jr. Women’s Club and POA Tree-lighting Ceremony. Families are invited to gather around the big tree in front of the Lodge for falling snow, free hot chocolate and cookies and entertainment provided by Dianna’s Dance, Twirlers and Choraleers. Festivities begin at 4 p.m. Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive at 6. The JWC is accepting donations of canned goods and new or slightly used blankets and coats. Those who make contributions will receive opportunity tickets toward a prize drawing.
     • On Saturday, December 12, from 9 to 11 a.m., Santa will make another stop in Canyon Lake at the North Causeway Ski Pavilion, where he will pose for pictures and have the annual Ski Club’s “Breakfast with Santa.”
“Pancake Bob” Burns will cook specially designed pancakes for kids and, for a donation of $5 per family, he just might make a pancake or two for their parents. Don’t forget to bring a camera to get a picture with Santa! During this event, guests are invited to view a ski tournament featuring slalom and trick skiing for all ages and abilities. Breakfast guests and spectators are invited to park in the parking lot on the west side of the Causeway. For more information, call Bruce Yarbrough at 244-8753.
     • Also on Saturday, December 12, is the high anticipated Parade of Lights – that is, if enough boaters sign up to participate! This event can never be taken for granted from year to year, as the threat of cancellation is always imminent if not enough boaters register early with the Yacht Club. For a registration form, see Page A-11.
     • Seniors often are the best supporters of all of these events, but they also have their own events coming up this month. A free Christmas dinner-party will be held at the Senior Center on Sunday, December 13. And tickets are now on sale for the Senior Center New Year’s Eve party on December 31. Information about these events can be found on Page A-7.
     • The Lodge will be the site of a gala Mardi Gras-themed New Year’s Eve party on Thursday, December 31. For details, see Page A-8.
