Letter: City/Chamber squabble

I read with astonishment the letter to the editor from Mike Irvin (November 13) entitled “Political Bullies.” I was at the November 4 City Council meeting when Mr. Irvin chastised the Mayor for her comments to a reporter at The Press Enterprise regarding a press release issued by the Chamber critical of Congressman Darrell Issa for not attending a Chamber function.
He also criticized the Council for not listening to the comments of the Chamber and business community and “doing as they pleased.” He stated that he was going to introduce a motion at the next Chamber board meeting to have the Chamber not enter into a contract with the City.
Prior to the close of the meeting, Councilman Talbot and the Mayor both addressed Mr. Irvin’s earlier remarks. Mr. Talbot’s remarks that Mr. Irvin’s remarks were “naive, inappropriate, unwarranted, untrue, inane and displayed absolute ignorance” were well deserved. Mr. Talbot was not bullying anyone when he noted his intention to introduce a motion to withhold City financial support to the Chamber, similar to Mr. Irvin’s own comments.
Immediately after the Council adjourned their meeting, Mr. Irvin shouted that the Council had not heard the last from him and that “Barry, you’re a jerk.” I hope that Mr. Irvin was not speaking on behalf of the Chamber. I believe that Mr. Irvin’s actions were despicable and trust that they do not represent the feelings of the Chamber.
