Little League sign-ups
     Canyon Lake Little League will hold sign-ups for Fall Ball tomorrow, September 6, and Saturday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Towne Center Conference Room. Fall Ball is an instructional league for children 5 to 14, and runs October 4 through November 8, with games held on Fridays and Saturdays.
     Teams will play approximately 12 games and each participant will receive hats and T-shirts. Children do not need to live within the regular Little League boundaries; Fall Ball is open to any child, regardless of where he or she lives. The cost to participate is $50. Concerned Citizens meeting
     Concerned Citizens will meet on Tuesday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Magnolia Room at the Country Club.

ALS party at Pepe’s
     Alicia Elizalde invites residents to come out for her annual party at Pepe’s Restaurant, a fundraiser for the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Featuring members of the Laker Girls, the event will be held tomorrow, September 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. Food, fun and karaoke are included with a $5 donation. Opportunity tickets will be sold for great prizes, according to Alicia. Thunder, the Lake Elsinore Storm team mascot, will also be there for the kids. TCHS dance camp
     Boys and girls in grades pre-K through 8th are invited to spend a day with the Temescal Canyon High School Titan Dance Team for a dance camp on Saturday, September 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will learn and then perform a dance routine in front of family and friends, share lunch with other dancers and get a TCHS Dance Team T-shirt. Dance styles will include jazz, lyrical, character and hip-hop.

Girl Scout sign-ups
     The Girl Scouts will hold “Super Sign-Up Saturday” on September 6, beginning at 9 a.m., at Stater Bros., 25904 Newport Rd. in Menifee. Sign-ups will be held for new and returning Girl Scouts in grades K to 12. Changes have been made to scouting, which lets girls join independently with options to participate in several different programs. Soldiers names needed
     “The Ladies of the Lake” want provide care packages for soldiers. They are in need of names of military personnel serving overseas who are related to Canyon Lake residents and who would appreciate receiving a care package. In addition to sending packages to the soldiers, they also support the Sun City Convalescent Hospital by providing large Velcro bibs, wheel chair covers, afghans, lap robes and other types of supplies.

Kids Acting Workshop
     Former child actor and resident Corky Pigeon, who appeared regularly in the ’80s sitcom Silver Spoons, will hold a free acting and modeling workshop at Pepe’s Restaurant in the Towne Center on September 20 at 1 p.m. The free “On Camera Commercial, Acting and Modeling Workshop” is designed to introduce youngsters ages 4 to 17 to auditioning skills, what to wear to an audition, how to book a job, how to choose correct head shots and how to get representation, to name a few. Special guests will include a casting director, a professional photographer/cinematographer and a professional actress. Seating is limited. Water Polo sign-ups
     Fall water polo is now in session for boys and girls ages 8 to 14 at Lakeside High School on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Some games will be played on weekends. LEGS meeting
     A meeting of the Lake Elsinore Genealogical Society (LEGS) will be held Wednesday, September 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Mission Trail Community Library, 34303 Mission Trail in Wildomar. Bud Miner will speak about “What can or does the Census tell.” LEGS meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month. A beginning/refresher genealogy workshop will be held on Wednesday, September 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. A beginning genealogy workshop is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Pet Spooktacular
     Animal Friends of the Valleys will hold a “Spooktacular Pet Costume Contest” on Saturday, October 25, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Baily’s Fine Dining, 28699 Old Town Front Street in Temecula. All proceeds will benefit the local animal shelter. The entry fee is $10 for each category: most creative and original, best pet and guardian look-alike, spookiest, funniest, stroller and wagon and character theme (movie and or book). Winning dogs will receive a prize. Owners can have their pet micro-chipped at the event for $15. Forty pet-related vendors will be on hand with couture clothing, designer furniture and other items. Bingo this Sunday
     The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo the first and third Sundays of each month starting at 1 p.m. and ending at approximately 4 p.m., in the City Multi-purpose Room. Diplomas for Veterans
     Operation Recognition is a program of the Riverside County Office of Education, with assistance from the Riverside County Department of Veteran’s Services, that presents diplomas to residents of Riverside County who missed completing high school due to military service in World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War, or because of internment in WWII Japanese-American relocation camps.
     Because of the tremendous response to the program, a second recognition ceremony for 2008 has been scheduled for Friday, November 14. In order to be recognized at the ceremony, completed application forms and supporting documentation must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1. Elks ‘Kulayd’ fundraiser
     The popular group, Kulayd, will perform once again at a fundraising event. Residents Bill and Bobbie White will host the fundraiser, “Kulayd Once Again,” which will raise money for the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge general fund. The event will take place at Trevi Entertainment Center on Saturday, October 4. The cost is $40 per person. The fundraiser will begin with cocktails at 5 p.m., roast beef dinner at 6, followed by the show at 8. For more information, contact Bill or Bobbie White at 244-9719.

Dinner concert
     Garden Path Ministries will host “Celebrating Freedom,” a fundraising dinner concert featuring the Celebrate Recovery Band, on Sunday, September 28, at 5 p.m. The event will be held at Cornerstone Community Church, 24570 Monte Vista Rd. in Wildomar. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children. According to organizers, part of the event cost ($15) is tax-deductible. It will include food by Filippi’s, testimonies, drawings and special guest Henry Alvarez, the founder/director of “Enlightened by Christ Ministries,” who will share about his life after parole. Proceeds will provide “Life Recovery” Bibles and “Free On the Inside” Bibles for inmates. For reservations or to host a table, call 244-6132.

Tutors needed
     The Menifee Union School District’s GREAT literacy program is looking for volunteers to tutor elementary age students. GREAT stands for Grandparents (or Graduates) Reading, Enriching and Tutoring and is located on several elementary campuses. Gas reimbursement is offered to senior citizens who volunteer.
     The program welcomes college students, adults, parents or seniors and invites them to experience the joy of helping a child. Volunteers can choose one or two days or more if desired. Tutoring is held Monday through Thursday. Daytime hours between 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. are available. Training for the program is provided. Tutoring begins Monday, September 8. Cookbooks still available
     The Canyon Lake Woman’s Club still has copies of its cookbook, “Tastes of Paradise,” a creative gift for friends and family. The cookbooks are on sale at Pack, Wrap and Post in the Towne Center or by calling Rita Wacker at 244-1881, Barbara Weatherman at 244-1618, Audrey Barrows at 244-5550, Barbara Duncan at 244-7513 or Sherry Attig 244-5378. The price is $20; proceeds benefit the Woman’s Club’s philanthropic endeavors in the community.

Bosom Buddies
     Bosom Buddies is a volunteer support organization dedicated to helping women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Women receive support and resources from other breast cancer survivors. Caregiver support group
     Caregiver Connection Support Group meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in room D 140. The Caregivers Connection is a support group for caregivers and their patients. There are activities planned for both the caregiver and those for whom they are caring. Senior softball
     Softball players, ages 55 and older, are needed for a senior men’s league in Menifee. The league plays on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Wheatfield Park, which is located next to the Menifee Campus of Mt. San Jacinto Community College. Art Walk, Cruise Night
     The Elsinore Valley Arts Network (EVAN) invites residents to its Saturday Night Art Walk on the first Saturday of each month from 3 to 7 p.m. For more information contact Robin Golden at 909-262-4684 or Barbara Middlebrook at 245-8890. The Lake Elsinore Marketplace holds a Cruise Night on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the food court parking lot next to Chili’s (Costco center). Hospital volunteers needed
     Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking hospital volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. The minimum age for volunteers is 16 years old. For more information call 679-8888, ext. 7254 or 925-6389.

Computer Club
     The Computer Club of Menifee Valley welcomes all who have an interest in computers. It meets at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month and offer presentations, guest speakers, question and answer sessions, a computer lab and computer classes. Quilting fabric needed
     Quilting supplies, including fabric samples, remnants, old sheets, old blankets, new fabric, embroidery thread and batting are needed by a quilting group working in conjunction with the Lutheran World Relief (LWR), which provides quilts to those in need. The quilting group meets from 9 a.m. to noon on the third Thursday of each month, at Faith Lutheran Church, 28200 Portsmouth Dr. in Sun City, and welcomes quilters. Child advocates needed
     The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Donate a mammogram
     The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one a thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.
