Woman’s Club The Woman’s Club meets on the third Wednesday of each month with a featured speaker or program. Lunch is served at each meeting. The first big event of the year is the Get Acquainted Party that will be held at Holiday Harbor on October 10. The theme is “ Starlit Nite in the Park” and will include games, music, dancing and a catered picnic. The cost is $20 per person. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and is for members or those who are thinking of joining. Women are invited to bring their husbands or boyfriends. The deadline for reservation is October 3. For more information contact Bonnie Harlow. The meeting on October 15 will feature Tom Thomas from Cops for Kids. The meeting on November 19 will be the annual Holiday Auction. A Christmas party featuring the Lighthouse Players will be held December 17. The Canyon Lake Woman’s Club is a non-profit, non-partisan philanthropic service organization dedicated to the enrichment of Canyon Lake and helping others less fortunate. This year’s theme is “Women As Shining Lights.” Those interested in learning more should call Membership Chairperson Cathy Barr at 246-1123. Art Association The Art Association will hold its next meeting on Thursday, October 2, at 7 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. The demonstrator will be Jack Ragland, whose oil and acrylic paintings show a passion and reverence for life. A 50/50 drawing will be held and artists will have their work judged by the guest demonstrator. Members will provide finger foods and coffee for guests and members. The Art Association hosts a “Monday Night Painters” workshop every Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Blue Bird Hall. Artists of all types and media are encouraged to work on their own artwork during this time. Residents are always welcome to attend all meetings. The next big event is the "Day with Artists" on Sunday, November 2, at the Lodge, when residents will be able to watch artists at work. Finger foods and soft drinks will be provided. Member Ella Weatherford has a booth at the Farmers Market each Sunday, where she displays and sells her Canyon Lake art collection. Member Jude Mathis is holding a series of beginning watercolor classes at Blue Bird Hall and can be contacted at 500-3353. Car Club Canyon Lakers who enjoy classic and custom automobiles are invited to join the Canyon Lake Car Club. The club meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Lodge to discuss upcoming events, listen to guest speakers and share automotive experiences. The club supports local car shows and charities and holds events such as drive-in movies, garage tours and poker runs; members also enjoy discounts from local automotive resellers. The club is now 100 members strong with room for more, and anyone owning a pre-1973 vehicle is welcome. Roadrunners The next scheduled RV trips are to Paso Robles in October and Borrego Springs in November. The Roadrunners Club egular meetings are held at the Lodge on the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. Guests are welcome to come and join the fun. Preparations are underway for Oktoberfest on October 25. Volunteer cooks for the famous brats will be needed. Cotillion The annual Dance Contest will be held October 3; everyone is encouraged to line up his or her partner. Parents should obtain the phone numbers of their child’s partner to avoid problems. Everyone is expected to participate, even new students, according to facilitator Ed Strong, who says a practice session will be held downstairs at the Lodge on the Wednesday prior to the event. The November session will be about table manners in preparation for the December 12 semi-formal dinner dance. For more information, call Ed Strong at 244-4500. Travel Club The bus for “All Shook Up” departs from the Lodge at 10 a.m. on September 21 and returns at 4:30 p.m. Participants should arrive before 9:45 a.m. so the bus can depart on time. The document party for the South Dakota trip is at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, in the Magnolia Room at the Country Club. Three multi-day trips remain: “South Dakota – the Black Hills and Badlands,” October 7 to 13; “South Pacific Wonders,” January 13 to 27, 2009; and “Discover the French Riviera,” March 4 to 11, 2009. The trips “Christmas on the Danube,” and San Antonio and Dallas New Year’s,” sold out to other organizations. For more details on these trips, contact Cookie Mathes at 246-2975. To join the club, contact Ann Norris at 244-5865. Twirlers Families, couples and singles are invited to join the Canyon Lake Twirlers Square Dance Club's new Phase One class, which began recently. There is open registration during the first two weeks and the first class is free. Classes are held every Wednesday from 7 to 8:15 p.m. The donation is $5 per person or $10 for families per class. Phase Two classes are held from 8:15 to 9:30 p.m. (Phase One is a pre-requisite). The Phase Two class teaches the higher level calls to prepare the dancers to attend all club level dances at Canyon Lake on the second Sunday of each month as well as dances sponsored by other clubs. "Square dancing is a wonderful, fun way to exercise your mind and body; no rhythm is required and it's a great way to meet new friends," says Wayne Canfield. Round dance classes are offered on Mondays from 12 to 2 p.m.; advanced classes from 2 to 4 p.m. A beginner line dance class is held Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room, led by Diana Gallagher; all ages are welcome.
