News Briefs Mommy and Me sign-ups Mommy and Me sign-ups will be held today, August 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at Bluebird Hall. The cost for the semester, which will run from August 22 to December 19, is $60 per child or $115 for two children. A schedule of events, dates, times and locations will be available on registration day and sign-ups are a must. T-shirt orders will be taken during registration. Mommy and Me is a non-profit club for children 18 months to 5 years old. According to organizers, the club is a great opportunity for moms and kids to make new friends and enjoy the company of others. Emergency volunteers needed The Canyon Lake Emergency Preparedness Committee’s next meeting will be held Thursday, September 4, at 7 p.m., at Blue Bird Hall. The Emergency Preparedness Committee is inviting all interested Canyon Lake residents to join its effort in handling unforeseen disasters. According to committee publicist Terry O’Neill-Johnson, the recent Chino Hills earthquake is a great reminder for families to be prepared. “If there is a disaster, don’t you want your family, friends and pets the chance to be helped,” she says. “Also, once your needs are met, be prepared to help others! The committee is the place to learn what to do and resources to seek when disaster strikes.” For more information contact Terry at 244-5271 or 265-9732 Elks ‘Kulayd’ fundraiser The popular group, Kulayd, will once again be performing in the local area at a fundraising event. Residents Bill and Bobbie White will host the fundraiser, “Kulayd Once Again,” which will raise money for the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge general fund. The event will take place at Trevi Entertainment Center on Saturday, October 4. The cost is $40 per person. Autism play event Bounce U of Murrieta will host play events for children with autism on the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. The cost is $8 per child and adults are free. “We wanted to offer a place to our local community that would provide a safe and fun environment for these children with special needs to play and interact with other children,” says owner Chris Hall. Elsinore Reunion tomorrow The Elsinore High School Class of 1963 invites graduates from the classes of 1959 to 1967 to join them for a reunion tomorrow, August 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the Elsinore Woman’s Club. Tutors needed The Menifee Union School District’s GREAT literacy program is looking for volunteers to tutor elementary age students. GREAT stands for Grandparents (or Graduates) Reading, Enriching and Tutoring and is located on several elementary campuses. Gas reimbursement is offered to senior citizens who volunteer. The program welcomes college students, adults, parents or seniors and invites them to experience the joy of helping a child. Volunteers can choose one or two days or more if desired. Tutoring is held Monday through Thursday. Daytime hours between 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. are available. Training for the program is provided and will be held on September 3 and 4. Dinner concert Garden Path Ministries will host “Celebrating Freedom,” a fundraising dinner concert featuring the Celebrate Recovery Band, on Sunday, September 28, at 5 p.m. The event will be held at Cornerstone Community Church, 24570 Monte Vista Rd. in Wildomar. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children. According to organizers, part of the event cost ($15) is tax-deductible. It will include food by Filippi’s, inspiring testimonies, prize drawings and special guest Henry Alvarez, the founder/director of “Enlightened by Christ Ministries,” who will share about his life after parole. Proceeds will provide “Life Recovery” Bibles and “Free On the Inside” Bibles for inmates. For reservations or to host a table, call 244-6132. AFV calendars Animal Friends of the Valleys is encouraging residents to submit color photos of their pets for a fundraising calendar. Entries are just $10 each. All proceeds will benefit animals at the local shelter. The submission deadline is Sunday, August 31, at 4 p.m. A professional panel will choose 13 photos to be featured as “pet of the month,” plus the front cover. All others photos will be included in the collage pages. See ‘Altar Boyz’ The Welk Resorts Theatre presents the Off-Broadway hit “Altar Boyz” through September 14. Winner of the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, “Altar Boyz” is described as a foot-stomping, rafter-rising musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy-band on the last night of its national “Raise the Praise” tour. The Boyz are five singing, dancing heartthrobs from Ohio: Matthew, Mark, Luke and Juan – and Abraham – who satirize the phenomenon of boy bands, Christian-themed music and contemporary American culture. Cruise to Cabo The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce four-day Baja Mexico cruise to Cabo San Lucas on Carnival’s “Elation” will set sail from San Diego on Thursday, December 4. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. Computer Club The Computer Club of Menifee Valley welcomes all who have an interest in computers. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one a thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. |
