News Briefs CLCT auditions are today The CLCT will hold auditions for “Sondheim Under the Stars” today, August 15, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., in the Pool View Room at the Lodge. Performers ages 18 years and up are invited to bring a current resume and be prepared to sing a Sondheim or Brown song of their choosing. No acappella auditions will be allowed. Garage sale today, tomorrow A garage sale will be held today and tomorrow at 22055 Mustang Ct. Mike and Jeanne Shroyer’s son, Ryan, has committed to go to Indonesia with a missionary outreach of Revival Christian Fellowship called “Revive Indonesia” (RI), a 501c3 nonprofit corporation. Ryan needs to raise $2,000 to participate in this outreach. The Shroyers invite residents to drop off items to sell at the garage sale or to come by and shop. Look for more information about Ryan’s trip in a future issue of The Friday Flyer. Mommy and Me sign-ups Mommy and Me sign-ups will be held on August 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at Bluebird Hall. The cost for the semester, which will run from August 22 to December 19, is $60 per child or $115 for two children. A schedule of events, dates, times and locations will be available on registration day and sign-ups are a must. T-shirt orders will be taken during registration. Mommy and Me is a non-profit club for children 18 months to 5 years old. According to organizers, the club is a great opportunity for moms and kids to make new friends and enjoy the company of others. Donate Blood There will be an opportunity for residents to donate blood tomorrow, August 16, when the Bloodmobile will be at the Canyon Hills Marketplace parking lot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 800-479-3902. AFV calendars Animal Friends of the Valleys is encouraging residents to submit color photos of their pets for a fundraising calendar. Entries are just $10 each. All proceeds will benefit animals at the local shelter. The submission deadline is Sunday, August 31, at 4 p.m. A professional panel will choose 13 photos to be featured as “pet of the month,” plus the front cover. All others photos will be included in the collage pages. Entry forms detail specific photo submission requirements and can be located online at www.animalfriendsofthevalleys.com (under “What’s happening?”) or at the shelter. For more information, call 471-8344. Tutors needed The Menifee Union School District’s GREAT literacy program is looking for volunteers to tutor elementary age students. GREAT stands for Grandparents (or Graduates) Reading, Enriching and Tutoring and is located on several elementary campuses. Gas reimbursement is offered to Senior Citizens who volunteer. The program welcomes college students, adults, parents or seniors and invites them to experience the joy of helping a child. Volunteers can choose one or two days or more if desired. Tutoring is held Monday through Thursday. Daytime hours between 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. are available. Training for the program is provided and will be held on September 3 and 4. The Center for Vision Development is offering a workshop to help parents learn about learning-related vision problems and how to test for and identify them. Jewish High Holidays Temple Lake Shalom will hold Jewish High Holiday services at the Lodge in September and October. See 'Altar Boyz' The Welk Resorts Theatre presents the Off-Broadway hit "Altar Boyz" through September 14. Winner of the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, "Altar Boyz" is described as a foot-stomping, rafter-rising musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy-band on the last night of its national "Raise the Praise" tour. The Boyz are singing, dancing heartthrobs from Ohio: Matthew, Mark, Luke and Juan Ð and Abraham Ð who satirize the phenomenon of boy bands, Christian-themed music and contemporary American culture. Ticket prices range from $44 to $47 for performance only and $58 to $63 for those who want to include a pre-show buffet at the Welk Resort's Canyon Grille. Computer Club The Computer Club of Menifee Valley welcomes all who have an interest in computers. It meets at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month and offer presentations, guest speakers, question and answer sessions, a computer lab and computer classes. Quilting fabric needed Quilting supplies, including fabric samples, remnants, old sheets, old blankets, new fabric, embroidery thread and batting are needed by a quilting group working in conjunction with the Lutheran World Relief (LWR), which provides quilts to those in need. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. Host an exchange student The Academic Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (AFICE) is seeking host families for the upcoming school year. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one a thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. |
