News Briefs Bingo The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo on the first and third Sundays of each month starting at 1 p.m. and ending at approximately 4 p.m., in the City Multi-purpose Room. The next get-together is July 6. Bring a new guest and receive a $10 game card for free. All proceeds are donated to charities. For more information, contact Sharon Timms at 244-3555 or Joanna Spiller at 244-1553. 4th of July in Lake Elsinore Lake Elsinore is celebrating its 120th anniversary and 4th of July, beginning with a boat parade and fireworks over the lake at 9:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, July 5, anniversary celebrations will take place in historic downtown Lake Elsinore, where there will be a number of free family activities. These include horse drawn hayrides and a petting zoo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; antique faire beginning at 7 a.m.; chili cook-off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; farmer’s market from 4 to 7 p.m.; and an art walk from 4 to 8 p.m. Other activities include two gunfighter shows, two folkorico dance performances, live music, food vendors, a craft faire and theatrical performances along Main Street performed by the Ophelia Theatre Group. A complete schedule is available from any downtown business. Elks Lodge groundbreaking The Lake Elsinore Elks invite the public to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge to be held Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m. The previous lodge was destroyed by fire last November. The structure and foundation were removed from the property located at 33700 Mission Trail in Wildomar. Members at a meeting held in June approved architectural plans for the new lodge. Casino Night The Brett Downey Safety Foundation, founded by Jim and Kathy Downey of Canyon Lake in memory of their son, Brett, is one of three sponsors for Casino Night 2008 to be held at the Escondido Cycle Center on Saturday, August 9, at 8 p.m. The event will boost awareness and raise funds for the foundation, which is dedicated to increasing safety awareness on local motocross tracks. The Hawaiian themed event has an age limit of 21 and up and will include 18 gaming tables. Table sponsorships are available. Escondido Cycle Center is located at 1415 Montiel Rd. in Escondido. LEGS The Lake Elsinore Genealogical Society will meet during the summer on Wednesday, July 9, July 23, August 13 and August 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Mission Trail Community Library, 34303 Mission Trail in Wildomar (between Bundy Canyon and Palomar at Canyon Dr.) The autobiography workshop will be held during the summer on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, until the regular meetings begin. Host a Japanese student Host families are needed for 20 students from Kagoshima, Japan, who will be here from July 23 to August 12. Mountain View Community Church is the host facility and all classroom studies and activities will be conducted there. The students are 12 to 17 years old, are proficient in English and want to experience a normal home life while here. Room sharing and foldout beds are acceptable. The league plays on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Wheatfield Park, which is located next to the Menifee Campus of Mt. San Jacinto Community College. For more information, call Ed Hustead at 679-8626. Furry Friends Kids Camp Animal Friends of the Valley is offering its “Furry Friends Kids’ Camp,” led by Humane Educator Leslie Kegley. Open to children 7 to 13 years old, the daily sessions will teach basic pet care, bite prevention, how to be safe around animals and the importance of controlling pet population. The next session is July 7 to 11, with the final session running July 21 to 25. Parent and child program The Lake Elsinore Unified School District’s Parent Participation Program is now accepting applications for its Cottonwood Canyon Elementary site. The class for parents with children newborn to age 5 meets twice a week. Parents will receive a parenting session with a different topic each week and will participate in arts, crafts, music and learning activities with their children as they prepare for the pre-school experience. Applications must be turned in at the district’s Children and Family Services office at 520 Chaney St. in Lake Elsinore between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. A copy of the child’s birth certificate is required. Club members meet at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month and offer presentations, guest speakers, question and answer sessions, a computer lab and computer classes. It is a free club with no dues. Meetings are two hours long and are held at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 29885 Bradley Rd. in Sun City. Caregiver support group Caregiver Connection Support Group meets at Canyon Lake Community Church on the second and fourth Mondays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon in room D 140. The Caregivers Connection is a support group for caregivers and their patients. There are activities planned for both the caregiver and those for whom they are caring. Investment club Parties interested in joining an investment club in Canyon Lake should call 951-848-9122 for a three-minute recorded message. According to organizer Ron Emshoff, the Canyon Lake Investment Club will be a member of the National Association of Investors Corporation, a non-profit association with a membership of over 12,000 clubs. The club will take direction and bylaws from that association, along with the Better Investing Community and Bivio. Each member must sign a partnership agreement and participate in decisions of the club, which is in need of several officers to fill vacancies. There is also a need for persons to do research. Each partner needs an e-mail address as most meetings and communications will be over the Internet. Hospital volunteers needed Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking hospital volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. No experience is necessary; training will be provided. Wanted: quilting fabric Quilting supplies, including fabric samples, remnants, old sheets, old blankets, new fabric, embroidery thread and batting are needed by a quilting group working in conjunction with the Lutheran World Relief (LWR), which provides quilts to those in need. The quilting group meets from 9 a.m. to noon on the third Thursday of each month, at Faith Lutheran Church, 28200 Portsmouth Dr. in Sun City, and welcomes quilters. Enrolling kindergartners-to-be Kindergarten registration is taking place at the Centralized Enrollment Center, 545 Chaney St. Children who are or will be 5 years old before December 2, 2008, can enroll in kindergarten for the 2008-09 year. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program, which speaks for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courts. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one a thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Host an exchange student Residents can add an international flavor to their household by hosting a foreign exchange student. The Academic Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (AFICE) is seeking host families for the upcoming school year. All exchange students attend the public high school, speak English, have their own spending money and medical insurance.
