Breast Cancer Survivors Tea The Bosom Buddies of Canyon Lake extend a special invitation to all breast cancer survivors to attend its “Inaugural Canyon Lake Survivor Tea and Lunch.” The event will be held on Friday, June 13, at noon in the Pool View Room at the Lodge. Family and friends are welcome to attend, although the event is for adults only. Lunch will be provided in addition to entertainment, guest speakers and a silent auction. The cost is $20 per person. Summer camp sign-ups Canyon Lake Middle School will be the local site for Southwest Family YMCA’s summer day camps. The camps feature arts and crafts, songs, games, water play, field trips, theme days and much more. Running from June 16 to August 8, the camps are geared for children aged 5 to 12. Twist’N U camp Summer camp will be available at Twist’N U located in Lake Elsinore. Tides is also offering Vacation Bible School for ages 4 through junior high from July 21 to 25, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Cottonwood Canyon Elementary School. The cost is $20 for the 1st child, $15 for additional children from the same address. The theme is “God’s Big Backyard.” Art Walk The Elsinore Valley Arts Network (EVAN) invites residents to its Saturday Night Art Walk/Saturday Night Downtown Stroll. Donate Blood/Marrow Free bone marrow testing will be offered at Valley Blood Services throughout June. Valley Blood Services is not only encouraging people to donate blood, but are also asking healthy individuals between 18 and 60 years of age to join the National Marrow Donor Program registry, in order to help the thousands of patients who are actively searching for a matching stem cell donor. A simple cheek swab taken at any San Diego Blood Bank donor center is all that is required to join the registry. Hospital volunteers needed Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking hospital volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. Quilting fabric needed Quilting supplies, including fabric samples, remnants, old sheets, old blankets, new fabric, embroidery thread and batting, are needed by a quilting group working in conjunction with the Lutheran World Relief (LWR), which provides quilts to those in need. Life Line Screening will be held at the Canyon Lake City Multi-purpose Room on Wednesday, June 11. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m. The complete screening package includes a new heart rhythm screening that checks for irregular heartbeat, a major risk factor for stroke. A stroke, also known as a “brain attack,” is ranked as the third leading killer in the world. Screenings are fast, painless and affordable. They help identify potential health problems such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk is also offered and is appropriate for both men and women. The cost for a Wellness Package with heart rhythm is $149. Community carnival The celebrate Recovery Ministry at Cornerstone Community Church in Wildomar is hosting a community carnival for all ages on Friday, June 27, from 5 to 10 p.m. Live music, food, games, a petting zoo, climbing wall, bounce houses and prize drawings are planned. Host families needed Residents can add an international flavor to their household by hosting a foreign exchange student. The Academic Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (AFICE) is seeking host families for the upcoming school year. All exchange students attend the public high school, speak English, have their own spending money and medical insurance. Child advocates needed The local organization of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children is seeking volunteers for its program, which speaks for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courts. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. No special education or background is needed – just a desire to help abused and neglected children. Volunteers must pass a background check, followed by a 30-hour training course. Join an investment club Parties interested in joining an investment club in Canyon Lake should call 951-848-9122 for a three-minute recorded message. According to organizer Ron Emshoff, the Canyon Lake Investment Club will be a member of the National Association of Investors Corporation, a non-profit association with a membership of over 12,000 clubs. The club will take direction and bylaws from that association, along with the Better Investing Community and Bivio. Each member must sign a partnership agreement and participate in decisions of the club, which is in need of several officers to fill vacancies. There is also a need for persons to do research. Each partner needs an e-mail address as most meetings and communications will be over the Internet. Camp scholarships Community Outreach Ministry of Wildomar is raising money for scholarships to benefit the littlest victims of crime to become responsible and successful citizens instead of society’s costly failures of tomorrow. Scholarships include lodging, transportation, home-cooked meals and indoor and outdoor activities. Camping not only has a positive impact on youth, but it also enriches the community, say organizers. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer website invites people to click on its site daily so it can meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one a thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. Computer Club The Computer Club of Menifee Valley welcomes all who have an interest in computers. Club members meet at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month and offer presentations, guest speakers, question and answer sessions, a computer lab and computer classes. It is a free club with no dues. Meetings are two hours long and are held at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 29885 Bradley Rd. in Sun City.
