News Briefs Scholarship Opportunities The Canyon Lake Yacht Club announced its 2008 scholarship program, which is open to high school seniors, who reside in Canyon Lake and attend a local high school. Last year’s recipient was Nolan Owen, who attends Northern Illinois University. Applications are available at the Career Center of the student’s high school or can be obtained by calling Scholarship Chair Candy Petersen at 244-8715. The Woman’s Club Scholarship Committee is meeting to review applications for the recipients of this year’s scholarships for continuing education. Club to honor military women The Canyon Lake Woman’s Club would like to honor women who reside in Canyon Lake or are related to women who reside in Canyon Lake and who have served in the U.S. military during the past 40 years. Bingo this Sunday The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo on the first and third Sundays of each month starting at 1 p.m. and ending at approximately 4 p.m., in the City Hall Multi-purpose Room. The next session will take place Sunday, March 2. Bring a new guest and receive a $10 game card for free. All proceeds are donated to charities. Vendors wanted The Junior Women’s Club is preparing for its annual Easter carnival on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the egg hunt, games and drawing, there will also be a rock-climbing wall. Booths are available to those interested in selling their crafts and boutique items for $25 per booth; vendors are also asked to donate an item to be used for a raffle prize. High school volunteers can earn community service hours by helping with the day’s activities. Clubs or individuals are invited to donate items for a drawing. Earn community service hours Students looking to earn volunteer hours are encouraged to sign up to work the Jr. Women’s Club Easter Carnival, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Holiday Harbor. Available jobs include set-up, clean-up, working carnival games or the bounce house, snack bar duty and selling cotton candy and popcorn. Donations wanted The Canyon Lake Middle School PTSA 8th Grade Dance Committee is looking for donations for its annual 8th Grade Promotion Dance. Stress reduction class Curves is offering a stress reduction class taught by Dr. Shamus Sheridan, who will discuss the stress factors women face each day – physical, emotional and chemical – and the effects they have on the body. It will be held Friday, March 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Curves. A light dinner will be served. There is no charge for the class or meal; however, reservations are required by calling CoCo Morrison at 204-7777. Residents don’t have to be members of Curves to attend this class. Curves food drive Curves For Women in the Canyon Lake Towne Center will hold its annual food drive from March 3 to 15. Those who donate a bag of groceries will have their membership fee waived; a savings of $149. Organizations interested in collecting the donated food for the homeless, a church or a shelter should contact CoCo at 204-7777. DAR meeting The Daughters of the American Revolution, Luiseno Chapter, will meet Tuesday March 25, at 11:30 a.m., at the Sizzler Restaurant in Murrieta, 40489 Murrieta Hot Springs Rd. Dana T. Parker will portray James Madison at the luncheon. He has performed at Independence Hall, Knott’s Berry Farm, at schools and for other organizations. He is a member of the Morgan’s Rifle Company, which is a Revolutionary War reenactment group. Everyone is invited to the luncheon, especially those interested in tracing their heritage to ancestors of the American Revolution. Attention artists The annual Elsinore Woman’s Club Art show is seeking area artists for its March 7 and 8 “Art and Soul” venue that will be held at the 101-year-old clubhouse at 710 W. Graham Avenue in Lake Elsinore. This year the show is for adults only, 17 years old and above. A separate children’s show is scheduled later this year. Registration is Thursday, March 6, from 3 to 8 p.m.; artwork must be ready for hanging or display. Judging will be Friday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by public viewing from 3 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, March 8 the show is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the artist reception and awards from 2 to 5p.m. on Saturday. This event is free to the public. For more information, call 674-3445. Furry Friends Kids’ Camp Animal Friends of the Valleys is having another Furry Friends Kids’ Camp this spring for ages 7 to 13. Bosom Buddies Bosom Buddies is a volunteer support organization dedicated to helping women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Coping with mental illness The Temecula chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has a Family-to-Family Education Program consisting of a series of 12 classes for family members of persons with serious mental illness (schizophrenia, depression, manic-depression/bipolar disorder, panic disorder and obsessive/compulsive disorder). The courses discuss the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teach the knowledge and skills family members need to cope more effectively. These classes represent a new concept and curriculum. There is no charge for the course; however, registration is required as class size is limited. Classes will be held on Mondays, beginning March 3, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Crossroads Church, 28753 Via Montezuma in Temecula. For more information, call 672-2089. Cancer conference The Cancer Legal Resource Center is hosting a free one-of a kind conference dedicated to educating people about cancer-related legal issues. The Inland Empire Cancer Rights Conference will be held on March 15, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the California Baptist University in Riverside. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Inland Empire, as well as the Office of Patients Advocates will sponsor the event, which will include gift bags and lunch. Breakout sessions will be held and a clinic will be offered for individuals to receive private consultation to answer specific questions. The conference is open to patients, survivors, caregivers and health care providers. Those unable to attend can make arrangement for a private presentation by the CLRC. Summer opportunity for vendors The Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce will host “Movies in the Park” on May 23, June 27, July 25 and August 22, and is looking for vendors. Free trees The Arbor Day Foundation, a non-profit organization, is offering free trees with a six-month or yearly membership. Six-month memberships are $10 and yearly memberships are $15. Spring water polo registration Registration for boys and girls ages 8 to 18 is now being taken for CHAWP’S spring water polo session at Temescal Canyon and Lakeside High Schools. Hospital volunteers needed Menifee Valley Medical Center is seeking hospital volunteers. Only four hours of volunteer service per week qualifies as an active member of the hospital volunteer team. Senior softball Softball players ages 55 and older are needed for a senior men’s league in Menifee. Donate a mammogram The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on its site daily to meet its quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site, www.thebreastcancersite.com and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle). This doesn’t cost one a thing. Corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising. |
