EVMWD receives statewide award for recycled water

Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District (EVMWD) is receiving statewide recognition for its unique Lake Elsinore Stabilization Project, which pumps nearly 4.5 million gallons of highly treated recycled water a day into Lake Elsinore to offset the lake’s annual evaporation losses.
The Theodore Roosevelt Award is given each year by ACWA to recognize the top water agencies in the state for their leadership in managing limited natural resources for the enhancement and protection of the environment while also meeting public needs. EVMWD’s Lake Elsinore Stabilization Project marked the first time in California that recycled water was tapped to permanently replenish a large full-body contact lake. Planning for this project began in 1997, when EVMWD and the City of Lake Elsinore created a Recycled Water Task Force. The Task Force was made up of 17 community leaders, who met monthly to evaluate the use of recycled water to restore and replenish Lake Elsinore. The project was not completed until last summer. Since the start up of the project in June 2007, EVMWD has added approximately 6,500 acre-feet of recycled water to the lake; helping to offset the nearly half of the 14,000 acre feet of water lost each year to evaporation.
EVMWD was selected as the Category 3 winner for the award and will be recognized at the 2008 ACWA Fall Conference and Exhibition on December 3 in Long Beach.
