Bassmasters

The November Tournament for the Canyon Lake Bassmasters was held on Saturday, November 8 and 24 anglers in 15 boats showed up to challenge the Lake for the day. The team of Shannon Perkins and Jack Cave, pictured here, emerged victorious with a limit weighing 14.96 lbs., topped off by the Big Fish of the tournament weighing 7.33 lbs. The team of Joey Gambina and George Cobb placed 2nd with 14.04 lbs., followed by the 3rd place team of Travis Smith and Russ Houghton with 13.61 lbs. The Canyon Lake Bassmasters meet on the first Wednesday of every month and hold a tournament on the following Saturday. They also hold six Team Open Tournaments per year, which are open to all residents of Canyon Lake. The club is active in many community events and hosts the annual Kids Fishing Derby each August. Those interested in learning more about bass fishing and low-pressure competition may call President Jon Evans at 244-5948. The club also sponsors a Junior Bassmasters club, which meets bimonthly and prior to the regular meetings. For more information, contact Sal Gervasi at 244-3294.

Lioness Club
     Lioness Donna Douglass will don her top hat to conduct the Canyon Lake Lioness’ annual auction fundraiser at the Lodge on Thursday, November 20. Lioness “elves” Rita Wacker and Mary Petty will display and sell the items which will include decorations, gifts, hand-made items and home baked goods. A 6:30 p.m. dinner and business meeting will precede the auction.
     Proceeds will help fund the club’s Thanksgiving and Christmas charitable projects, which are chaired by Fran Cota, Kay Nicholl and Betty Whitacker.
     Club members will meet to deliver the foodstuffs on Monday, November 24. Lunch at the Country Club will follow. For more information, contact President Ruby Letham at 244-5785, or Fran Cota at 244-2843.

Roadrunners
     The Roadrunners are planning a pre-Thanksgiving trip to Borrego Springs with 50 rigs attending. The trip will include games, great food and good friends, according to Gene Ebel.
     Regular meetings are held at the Lodge on the second Tuesday of each month, with cocktails at 5 p.m and dinner at 6. Guests are welcome. For more information, contact Gene Ebel at 244-9462.

Pinochle Club
     The Pinochle Club plays at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday in the Towne Center Conference Room. For more information, call Hal Funk at 244-3216 or Marlys Shilling at 244-4241.

Tennis Club
     The club’s next event is the Turkey Shoot tournament with a doubles round robin format on Saturday, November 22, at 8 a.m. Cost to participate is $10 per person; the deadline to sign up is Wednesday, November 19. To sign up, call Susan Tittlemier at 244-8189.

Car Club
     Canyon Lakers who enjoy classic and custom automobiles are invited to join the Canyon Lake Car Club at the Country Club on Saturday, November 22, from 8 to 10 a.m. for breakfast and a mini car show. “Visit with fellow classic auto enthusiasts, check out some awesome cars and bring your own ride for a chance to be the Car of the Month, all while enjoying a hot breakfast,” says Chuck Casey.
     The club holds monthly meetings the first Thursday of each month at the Lodge, with the next meeting set for December 4, at 5:30 p.m. Visit www.canyonlakecarclub.com to view all club activities, Car of the Month and other photo galleries or to download an application to join. The club welcomes anyone owning a pre-1973 vehicle. 

Yacht Club
     Yacht Club members are reminded the November dinner meeting will be held at the Country Club on Thursday, November 20. Social hour starts at 5 p.m. followed by the dinner meeting at 6 p.m. The Parade of Lights will be held on Saturday, December 13. For more information, contact Commodore John Petersen at 244-8715.

Travel Club
     The Christmas dinner-dance, “Celebrating 30 Years of Holiday Tradition with the Canyon Lake Travel Club,” will be held at the Lodge on Friday, December 5. Cocktails are at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7. The price is $45 per person for members.
     Reservations are limited to 200 people. Music will be provided by the Mikole Karr Band. There will be prizes, including special 30th anniversary prizes. Reservations are now open and will close on November 26. For more information, contact Maxine Whalen at 244-6333.
     Two new single day trips have been arranged for 2009. The first trip is on February 24. It includes a walking tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratories and lunch at McCormick and Schmick's. It is limited to 40 people. Entrée selections are chicken piccata, fish of the day or sirloin steak. The cost is $58 for members. Members should check the November newsletter for JPL requirements and restrictions.
     The second day trip is on Sunday, March 22, and includes brunch and matinee performances at the Magic Castle. The cost is $110 for members. Both of these trips are open for members on November 20. Checks will not be accepted before that date. For more details on these trips, contact John or Lou DeYoung at 244-7100.
     Two multi-day trips are scheduled: “South Pacific Wonders,” January 13 to 27, 2009, and “Discover the French Riviera,” March 4 to 11, 2009. For more details on these trips, contact Cookie Mathes at 246-2975. To join the club, contact Ann Norris at 244-5865.

Women’s Golf Club
     Ladies are invited to join “Playing 9 Holes Only” group. Tee times are 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and will vary depending on the seasons. Check-in is 30 minutes prior to tee time. For more information, contact Mary Leathley at 244-0114.
     The Autumn Memories Jack and Jill Golf Tournament will be held tomorrow, November 15, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

Cotillion
     The Semi-formal dinner-dance will be held on December 12 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and will feature a live band. Parents are invited to dress up and dance with their children, beginning at 8:45 p.m. “This is really a special evening and hopefully the first of many for these wonderful young people,” says Ed Strong. He also says a personal RSVP by each member is absolutely mandatory to avoid problems experienced in past years. For more information, call Ed at 244-4500.

Woman’s Club
     The November meeting will be held Wednesday, November 19, at 10 a.m. at the Lodge. It will be the annual “Holiday Auction,” which will be conducted by past-president Donna Douglas. “This is one of the club’s major fundraisers and it is always a lot of fun,” says Bonnie Carnagey. Members and guests are invited to donate homemade crafts, baked goods, gourmet baskets and new purchased items to the Lodge by 9:30 a.m. the day of the meeting. The price for lunch is $13, cash or check. The reservation deadline has passed. To cancel reservations call Sharon Carlson at 244-1359.

CLAMS
     This is the time for all new members to sign up for the Canyon Lake Association of Men. The special $30 membership price will include the free steak dinner this year and full membership for all of 2009. It also includes the free picnic and cocktail parties for members and their guest and early sign up for the Laughlin trip at the Aquarius Casino (formerly Flamingo). Men are invited to come to the Country Club on Wednesday, November 19, to “join the gang.” Drinks are served at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7.

Art Association
     The Art Association meets the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in the Towne Center Conference Room. The public is invited.
     Every Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. the Art Association hosts a “Monday Night Painters” workshop at Blue Bird Hall. Artists of all types and media are encouraged to work on their own artwork during this time. For more information, call Joanie Evarts at 244-3378 or David Johnston at 244-6209.

Twirlers
     The Canyon Lake Twirlers Square Dance Club's Phase One class is held every Wednesday from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Phase Two classes are held from 8:15 to 9:30 p.m. and teaches the higher level calls to prepare the dancers to attend all club level dances on the second Sunday of each month as well as dances sponsored by other clubs. 
     Round dance classes are offered on Mondays from 12 to 2 p.m.; advanced classes from 2 to 4 p.m.
     A beginner line dance class is held Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room, led by Diana Gallagher; all ages are welcome. A beginning to intermediate line dance class is offered Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Holiday Bay Room.
