In Memoriam: Rose Ng Chong

Rose Ng Chong passed away on August 30, 2007, at the age of 91.
She was born on May 10, 1916, in Canton, China. She earned a doctorate degree in midwifery and served as a nurse in Chiang Kai-shek’s army during WWII.
She married Jeu Quock Chong who served in the U.S. Army. He finally received his hard fought citizenship.
The couple met and married in China during a return trip home by Mr. Chong. Due to immigration laws, the couple was separated 10 years but was reunited and had been married 52 years when Mr. Chong passed away in 1989. Mr. and Mrs. Chong helped to form the first and only Chinese First Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee.
While Mrs. Chong lived in Canyon Lake, she helped raise her grandchildren, Niki Rose and Michael John Loo. According to her daughter, Helen Jeu, Mrs. Chong was an inspiring person who had nothing as a child but accomplished much.
Her faith never wavered throughout her hardships and she became a painter, local secretary for the National Lung Koon Association and published a poem at 80 years of age.
Mrs. Chong was buried on September 7 at the historic Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee.
