Mavis and Randy Schutz flank actress and Operation Smile Ambassador Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel) at the Operation Smile 25th anniversary gala.

Announcement: 'Operation Smile'

Canyon Lake residents Mavis and Randy Schutz are volunteers for the organization, “Operation Smile,” an organization of medical and non-medical volunteers that provides help for children in Third World countries who suffer from facial deformities such as cleft lip.
Through the organization’s efforts, thousands of children receive new smiles and Randy’s company, Biogel, works in partnership with it to provide all the surgical gloves for the operations.
Operation Smile celebrated its 25th anniversary on October 5 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Mavis and Randy attended the gala, along with spokesperson, Roma Downey, a longtime ambassador for the organization. Downey, star of “Touched by An Angel,” recently traveled to Vietnam with the organization and says she’s continually moved by how Operation Smile’s amazing work changes children’s lives.
Thanh, a 9-year-old Vietnamese boy who was helped by volunteers, says of his experience with the deformity, “Every day the cleft lip I was born with caused me pain and humiliation. On my first day of school, the other children taunted me so mercilessly because of my disfigured mouth that I refused to go back. It seemed that my whole life would be ruined by this curse.” Since Thanh’s successful operation he has happily returned to school.
In November 2007, around the world, on the same day, at the same local time, Operation Smile will conduct 40 missions in 25 countries, with the hope of treating an estimated 5,000 children with facial deformities. Randy and Mavis will be traveling to Paraguay, South America, to assist the surgical team in performing much needed surgeries for these special children.
