2007 Car Show is a big success

Many Canyon Lakers accepted the invitation to take their classic cars “Out of the Garage and Down to the Lodge” last Saturday as the POA sponsored its second annual car show. The event attracted a crowd of spectators as well.
A total of 206 cars were on display at the event, which raised $2,400 to benefit the Progeria Research Foundation. Progeria is an extremely rare and little understood genetic disease characterized by premature and accelerated aging. Children with Progeria die of heart disease or stroke at an average age of 13 years.
Adding to the excitement that day was the appearance of Chip Foose and his “Speed Bird” – a customize Ford Thunderbird. Chip is star of the popular car show, “Overhaulin,” and the son of Canyon Lakers Sam and Terry Foose, who manned the Progeria booth and auction that raised money for the Foundation that day.
The Foose’s daughter and Chip’s sister, Amy, died of Progeria at the age of 16. Money raised at the Progeria booth will go toward a clinical drug trial of the Progeria Research Foundation now being conducted in three Boston hospitals. For more information about Progeria and the Fooses’ daughter, see Page A-13
Money was also raised by selling posters designed and autographed by Chip. In addition, unsigned posters advertising the 2007 car show were offered for sale, as were hats and T-shirts bearing Chip’s unique artwork.
Judges for the car show included members of the POA Board of Directors and the City Council. The only criteria, according to Activities Manager Kathie Barnes, was “the cars they liked best.”
Winners, in no particular order, included Joe Landin and his 1941 Willys Coupe, Hans Weg with a 1929 Ford Model A, Kent Bruns who displayed his 1940 Ford Deluxe, Tom Mershon and his 1960 Corvette, Carolyn Bushey who entered her 1957 Ford T-Bird and Russell Smith with his 1956 Chevy Nomad.
Other judge-pleasers were Sean McDonald and his 1962 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, John Hollenbeck who took his 1956 Ford T-Bird to the Lodge, Chauncy Newlin who entered his 1936 Ford Cabriolet, Larry Candelaria and his 1949 Mercury, Pete Delia who displayed his 1934 Ford Coupe and Tony LeFeber and his 1960 Morris Miner Traveler.
According to Kathie Barnes, one of the winners did not pick up his trophy. “So if your name appears here and you did not get a trophy, please call me at 244-6841, ext. 610.
