Photographing presidents to pop stars

Sit down at one of the bars in Canyon Lake and there’s a chance you may toss back a cold one with a man named Jimmy Meyer who can tell you what it’s like to film such one-name celebrities as Cher and Shakira.
In fact, if you’re patient and willing to prod, he can give you a whole list of VIPs who have done their thing in front of the lens of his camera – from Sophia Loren to Sammy Sosa, from Michael Jordan to Michael Jackson, from Prince Phillip to the Grateful Dead to Hilary Duff. Whether they’re heads of state, famous athletes or pop stars, Jimmy has probably recorded their faces on film at some point during his career as a cameraman/director/photographer.
Jimmy says he came to Canyon Lake in 2003 to look after his mother and sister, Rita and Diane Meyer, after the passing of his father and brother. “I liked Canyon Lake and met so many nice people I never went back to Chicago,” he says. Fortunately for Canyon Lakers, he may on occasion, as in this week’s B-1 Photo of the Week, offer his photographs for publication in the community newspaper.
Using a Nikon D2X, the best digital camera Nikon makes, Jimmy currently works as a freelance photographer and cameraman for SIP Productions and On Request Images, shooting live news stories, special events and photo shoots.
Some of his more interesting assignments over the past year have included videotaping a photo shoot of Celine Dion for In-Style Magazine; videotaping the red carpet premiere of the movie “Stealth ” starring Josh Lucas, Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx on the tarmac at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego; and shooting the last 16 days of the Michael Jackson trial for Court TV, doing the show’s live satellite guest interviews in Santa Maria.
Other interesting assignments have included videotaping a photo shoot and interviews of 40 NBA basketball stars for ESPN Hollywood in Las Vegas; a Bloomberg television special in San Diego; and a video photo shoot for Teen People Magazine in Beverly Hills of famous teens Hilary Duff and Joel Madden.
He has also recently done promotional photography for businesses like the Nano Technology Institute, Sharkeez nightclub in Newport Beach and the Beach House in Pismo Beach.
Over the course of his career as a news cameraman and photojournalist, Jimmy has been assigned to cover over 15,000 news stories and has done over 10,000 live shots. Some of the more notable assignments include the White House press pool in 2000, royal visits in 1987 and 1996, several presidential campaigns, inaugurations and trips and military events at bases around the Southwest.
Not only are his subjects interesting, but the manner in which Jimmy sometimes gets to shoot them is as well. He has shot pictures and video from such helicopters as the Blackhawk, Bell Jet Long Ranger and Hughes 500/300, and from such aircraft as a refueler, Lear jet, blimp and hot air balloon. He’s also shot from moving vans, jeeps, tanks and even a jet boat.
As he takes time for leisure in Canyon Lake, perhaps he’ll join the ranks of photographers like Bert Barbay, Tony Arendt and Richard Bannock, whose masterful works have graced the pages of The Friday Flyer on numerous occasions.
In the meantime, for residents who need headshots or event photography, Jimmy can be reached at jimmymeyer@mac.com.
