Canyon Lake clean-up day is June 24
     The City of Canyon Lake and CR&R will join together Saturday, June 24, to provide a Community Clean Up Day for residents here. The event will be held at the Canyon Lake Community Church from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. when all normal household trash and green waste, as well as bulky items such as sofas and refrigerators, will be accepted.
     CR&R will not be accepting household hazardous waste that day (paint, motor oil, household cleaners, old TVs, electronic waste, etc.) However, residents can contact Riverside County’s Hazardous Waste Department at 1-800-304-2226 for information on disposing of these materials.

See 'Peter Pan'
     Canyon Lakers Barbara Egbert and Ilene Moore are encouraging local families to attend this weekend’s production of 'Peter Pan,' which will be presented at Temescal High School’s theater this weekend.
     The curtain will go up tonight, June 16, at 7 p.m and tomorrow, June 17, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Sunday, the play will begin at 3 p.m. – a perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day, says Barbara. Call Ilene for tickets at 239-1177. Pre-sale tickets are $12 for preferred seating, $8 for general seating and $5 for children under 12. Tickets will also be available at the door at $15 for preferred seating, $10 for general admission and $7 for children. The box office will be open an hour before each show. Temescal High School is located at 38755 El Toro Road.

'Yard sale' this weekend
     The YMCA is holding a “yard sale” at Blue Bird Hall today and tomorrow, June 16 and 17, and is inviting Canyon Lakers to stop by. There will be a wide variety of items for sale, and residents can find great deals while helping the fundraising efforts of the YMCA pre-school program.

Water polo clinic
     CHAWP Water Polo is offering a four-week clinic for boys and girls 6 to 12 years old, Monday and Wednesday nights beginning June 19 at Lakeside High School. The cost is $50 per session, with three classes offered – from 5 to 6 p.m., 6 to 7 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Participants must also join United States Water Polo as a trial member (for insurance purposes) and be able to swim. The classes will be instructed by All American and two-time First Team All CIF player, Kendell Olds (now playing for UC Santa Barbara) and League MVP Michael Delaney (now playing at Chaffey College). Fiesta VBS for kids
     New Song Calvary Chapel invites children to “Fiesta: Where Kids are Fired Up about Jesus,” Monday, June 26 through Friday, June 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. daily. Kids will join nearly a million children in North America and take part in a hands-on mission program that will reach needy children in Latin American countries and includes fun, memorable bible learning activities for kids of all ages. Bingo
     The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo the first and third Sundays of each month beginning at 2 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. The next session will take place June 18 with the following opportunity to join on July 2. Enjoy a Sunday afternoon with other Bingo enthusiasts while benefiting charities such as the Loma Linda Lions Eye Foundation, Guide Dogs of the Desert, Canine Companions, Student Speaker Foundation, Lions Hope (AIDS), Friends Cross the Border, City of Hope and others. RCUC dinner meeting
     Riverside County United Communities will hold a dinner meeting Tuesday, June 20, at 6 p.m. at the Boston Billie’s Restaurant in Sun City. Deputy Planning Director Mark Balys will speak at 7 p.m. on the County of Riverside Land Use and Development Ordinance that was revised May 30. Host an international student
     Families who would like to host an international student from July 5 to August 1 are reminded they can contact Josie Rigden at 678-8549 or 764-0101 any weekday after 3 p.m. She has letters and biographical information on teens from Finland, France, Hong Kong, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Vietnam.

Chamber news
     The City of Canyon Lake and Chamber of Commerce Night will be held at the Lake Elsinore Storm stadium on Saturday, July 29, for all Canyon Lakers, clubs and businesses. Tickets will be on sale at the Chamber office, Pack, Wrap and Post and Olga’s Cleaners for $10 each.
     The special feature includes Peter Bernstein of the Storm presenting the kick off. A tailgate party will begin at 5 p.m. and will feature a free steak sandwich or hot dog prior to the game for all ticket holders. Free ice cream sandwiches will also be available provided by the City of Canyon Lake in celebration of its 15-year anniversary. A 50-50 drawing with proceeds going toward a scholarship for the Chambers Youth of the Year will also take place. For more information on either event call the Chamber office at 244-6124.

Mainstream events
     The Mainstream “Builders” are also looking forward to attending the outdoor amphitheater at the Redlands Bowl on Tuesday, June 27. The Community Sing will be at 7 p.m. with the Summer Music Festival, put on by award winning young artists, beginning at 8:15 p.m.
     There will be no cost for this event; however, Redlands Bowl does take a goodwill offering at intermission. Attendees may want to bring a seat cushion, sweater or blanket for the outdoor event.

Artist news
     Christy Bruce is holding a workshop, “Conquering the Negative: Painting that is!” tomorrow, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room for $40. Christy’s paintings are currently on display at Guaranty Bank. For more information contact Christy at 244-2727.
     The artwork of Erin Pendleton is on display at the Mercantile Gallery in Old Temecula, 42051 Main Street and will remain there until July 9. The City of Temecula and the Arts Council of Temecula are the sponsors for this event.

Preschool enrollment
     Open enrollment at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Preschool in Wildomar is currently accepting registrations for the 2006-2007 school year. The preschool offers a half-day program from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Friday. Spaces are available in the 3 to 4 year old classes. Tuition is calculated by the number of days per week a child attends. An eight-week summer program is also available, with classes July 11 through August 31, Tuesday and Thursday. Habitat for Humanity
     Beginning in June, Habitat for Humanity will begin to build five houses in Temecula at the corner of Pujol and First Streets, with a completion date of December. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, simple, affordable houses will be built. These houses are sold to selected “partner” families at no profit with no-interest loans. This keeps the monthly mortgage payments affordable. In turn, Habitat pays the taxes and insurance out of the mortgage payments and uses the balance towards building more homes. If interested in volunteering see habitat4inlandvalley.org. Habitat will also have two fundraisers benefiting Inland Valley Habitat for Humanity. A Golf Tournament Monday June 19 at Temecula Creek Inn, and a community baseball game at the Lake Elsinore Storm August 11. Tickets are $7.

Talent showcase
     Auditions for the 17th Annual Temecula Valley Talent Showcase will be held June 24 at the Community Recreation Center, 30875 Rancho Vista Road. Pre-registration is mandatory.
     The Talent Showcase will be held Saturday, August 5, from 5 to 10 p.m., and is open to all performing artists residing in North San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Categories include: Children (up to age 12), Teen (13 to 17), Adult (18 and older) as of August 5. Dance and Instrumental Music categories are open to all ages. Novelty acts are also encouraged to audition. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three acts in each category.

Help donate mammograms
     Visit a Breast Cancer site each day and a free mammogram will be donated to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle.)
     This doesn’t cost a thing since corporate sponsors and advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Free 4-1-1 for cell phones
     Some cell phone companies are charging us $1 or more for 4-1-1 information calls. Those who need to use the 4-1-1 number can simply dial 1-800 FREE-411 (1-800-373-3411) without incurring a charge except for the minutes required to make the call.

Chamber cruise
     The 14th Annual Chamber Cruise sponsored by Canyon Lake Travel has been scheduled for October 16 to 21. The five-day Mexico cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade Of The Seas will depart from San Diego, with ports of call in Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas; passengers can take advantage of the ship’s onboard entertainment and dining, spa and health club and other activities while at sea. Interior staterooms begin at $536 per person, with large ocean-view staterooms starting at $636 per person. Free bus to San Diego from Canyon Lake will be provided with a minimum of 20 passengers.

Sports Camp
     On August 7 to 11, Cornerstone will also host Sports Camp for grades Kindergarten to 5th grade. This week-long session will not only help kids improve their skills, but build lifelong relationships. Registration is $25 and includes T-shirt and more. Flag football
     The Southwest Family YMCA is taking sign-ups for its summer flag football season. Games are played on Saturdays in the Murrieta area, and will run from June 17 to August 19. The league is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grade, based on their grade in fall, 2006. Players are grouped by school and local area.
     The registration fee is $110 and includes a jersey and trophy. Financial assistance is available to families who qualify. Volunteer coaches are needed. Seeking Tiger Cubs
     Canyon Lake Pack 346 is looking for 1st graders to join their High Adventure Tiger Cub den. Canyon Lake resident and Eagle Scout Tim Janes will lead this year’s high intensity scouting program that will feature such activities as canoeing, sailing, hiking, camping, fishing, golfing, water-skiing, archery and much more. Tennis players wanted
     Senior women or younger interested in playing recreational doubles tennis at the Canyon Lake courts are invited to call Jeanne Nelson at 951-623-9339 to work out a time on Monday and Friday mornings.

Community Outreach Ministry
     A non-profit organization, the Community Outreach Ministry in Wildomar assists needy individuals and families through emergency resources and referrals as well as providing free summer camp scholarships for needy children and training at-risk youth in creative arts. Community Outreach Ministry always welcomes sponsors, volunteers and donations. For more information about the services they provide or to offer time or donations, please call 698-7650. Hospital volunteers needed

Runners wanted
     San Diego Running Club has started a Temecula Valley chapter. A couple of Canyon Lake and Canyon Hills residents have joined the group and invite anyone who is an experienced runner or who wants to be a runner to join them for Saturday morning runs. The club provides all types of training. “If you want to run your first 5K or if you are training for your 10th marathon we have place for you,” says Greg Dale.
