Letter: Reconsider motorcycle ban Editor, The Friday Flyer: When we moved to Canyon Lake, my husband and I were aware that motorcycle riding was restricted in the community. That was 20 years ago. Today we live in a rapidly changing world. The price of gasoline is a major issue, as is environmental pollution and conservation. It is surely within reason to ask for relief from this restriction. Canyon Lake residents who are licensed, insured and have legally registered motorcycles really do need the privilege to ride in and out of the community. Many of us are not physically able to push a bike or load it into a truck. Those concerned about noise levels, please be aware that California has mandated noise level restrictions for street bikes. Manufacturers must follow these guidelines. If the city desires, it can check for stock exhaust systems. Any motorcycle failing to meet noise level requirements can be disallowed the privilege requested. This program can be monitored by security, just as other traffic related issues are handled. Stickers can be issued and a low speed could be designated. Problems could be addressed with tickets and fines. We live in a nation that supports gasoline conservation, i.e. car pool vans, car pool lanes and hybrid vehicles. California recognizes motorcycles for their low gas consumption and affords riders the privilege of using car pool lanes. Europeans have successfully turned to motor-driven cycles for transportation. We are not asking to ride freely or bring in guests. As residents, we want the privilege of riding slowly to the security gates to exit and return to our homes. I can attest to the fact that leaving a motorcycle parked at the gates is not a good alternative. I tried that for one week and in that time another bike fell into mine, ripped my cover, broke a lever and knocked my motorcycle into a car. Linda Milan |
