Bonelli's Bistro: Sansui Sushi

By Dan and Patty Bonelli
Restaurant Reviewers

Japanese cuisine, especially sushi, has risen dramatically in popularity in the past 10 years. Sushi bars have sprung up in strip malls all across Southern California. Some are good, some not so good.
Raw fish is not the type of edible treat for which you want to compromise quality. Freshness is key, everything else is secondary. We always approach a new sushi bar with a significant amount of caution, and I will admit that Sansui Sushi was no exception.
Located adjacent to the Mobil gas station on Highway 74 and the 15 freeway, we quickly nicknamed it Highway 74 Sushi. Something, however, didn’t seem right about a sushi bar perched on the side of Highway 74. We’ve eaten there twice now, and I must admit the sushi was surprisingly good.
The fish was fresh and of good quality, and there was a large selection of specialty rolls. We sampled a wide variety of Nigiri style sushi (fish and rice) and found all of our selections to be quite good. Our son, however, had the chicken teriyaki entrée and found the chicken to be somewhat dry and flavorless.
The restaurant is quite small with the sushi bar seating approximately 10. The business is relatively new (less than one year) which may explain why the restaurant was uncrowded during the weekend. Our overall impression of Sansui Sushi is that of an average Japanese restaurant; however, I must admit that the sushi was surprisingly good on the two occasions we sampled it.
A large selection of specialty rolls keep it interesting. We recommended the Anaconda Roll, which consists of shrimp tempura, crab meat, avocado and eel. This restaurant is great for a fast meal since it is not usually crowded.
     The hours of operation are Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Japanese restaurants always close between lunch and dinner as a custom.
On a rating scale of 1 (poor) to 6 (top shelf), we gave Sansui Sushi: 3 for ambience, 4 for service, 4.5 for presentation, and 4’s for flavor and value, for a total of 19.5.
The restaurant is located at 29280 Central Avenue, Suite. K in Lake Elsinore and can be reached at 245-1864.
     Chef's Corner: Banana’s Foster
Banana’s Foster is an unbelievable dessert that was originally created in New Orleans and named after a patron of the Commanders Palace Restaurant. Preparation is quick and easy and the results are fabulous.
Make this one for your family and friends and watch the expression on their faces as they take the first bite.

4-6 bananas (1 per person cut into 4’s lengthwise then across)
     ½ C. brown sugar
     ½ stick butter
Ground Cinnamon to taste approximately ½ TBSP
     Splash of banana liquor
     Splash of light Bacardi rum
     Walnut pieces (optional)

Melt the butter in a sauce pan then add the brown sugar, bananas and cinnamon. Quickly mix together and add the alcohol. Stand away as you ignite with an open flame and finish cooking flambé style. Serve over vanilla ice cream.
Wow, you’re now a master chef!
