CL girl a delegate at Girls State Convention The Lake Elsinore American Legion Auxiliary is proud to announce that Tracy Empson, a Canyon Lake resident and junior at Temescal Canyon High School, will represent Lake Elsinore in the 2006 Girl’s State Convention in July. She was chosen because of her outstanding leadership skills and interest in the field of politics. Also, on May 14, Tracy placed first in her division, “Individual Documentary,” at the California State History Day competition in Sacramento. Nearly 1,000 students competed for spots on the California State Team, which will compete next week, June 11 to 15, at the National History Day in Maryland. Tracy developed her documentary on “The Bonus March of 1932,” during which 20,000 WWI veterans took a stand for veterans’ rights on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. The action eventually led to President Franklin Roosevelt proposing veterans legislation, which led to the GI Bill. Tracy is not new to competing in History Day. She competed in National History Day while an 8th grade student. That year, she was the national champion with her film on the Japanese Internment. This year, Tracy will not only be competing for top honors but, as a high school student, she is eligible for scholarships and other prizes. |
