The Friday Flyer Assistant Editor Christopher Meltzer has lived in Canyon Lake since 2000 with his mother and stepfather, Dr. Christine and Dan Kraus. Christine, a clinical neuropsychologist, at one time had a practice called the Brain and Behavior Fitness Center in the Canyon Lake Towne Center but has since moved to Menifee. Christopher has had occasion to work there since March 2005, in addition to working at the Von’s supermarket in Lake Elsinore. Christopher was this year’s Associated Student Body (ASB) president at Temescal Canyon High School. He has been a member of the ASB Student Council since 9th grade when he served as president of the freshman class. In 10th grade he was commissioner of the student store, and in 11th grade he was junior class vice president. One of 19 valedictorians at TCHS, Chris is ranked number six in a class of 548 students with a GPA of 4.14. He had a combined SAT score of 1780 and ACT score of 26. He has been in the Top 100 (top 25 GPA in his class) each year of high school and is a member of the California Scholastic Federation (CSF) and National Honor Society (NHS). Chris received Department Awards in Algebra II (grade 10) and Language Arts (grade 11), as well as Golden State Honors in First Year Algebra as a freshman. He was in Who’s Who Among High School Students and National Honor Roll in grade 11. As a Student of the Month in grades 10, 11 and 12, Chris received Certificates of Recognition from local, county and state officials, including a Scholastic Achievement Award from Senator Jim Battin. In addition to Student Council, Chris’ extracurricular activities included working on Yearbook staff all four years; in grades 11 and 12, he was the Editor-in-Chief. He was in Mock Trial in grades 10, 11 and 12. He was also a member of the School Site Council and served on the leadership team for WASC Accreditation. As a senior, he was a student representative to the LEUSD Board of Education. Chris’ peers chose him as Most Outstanding Freshman and Most Outstanding Sophomore, as well as a President’s Choice award in 11th grade. Before other school activities began taking so much of his time, he was a member of the JV water polo team and JV swim team during his freshman year. He played varsity tennis as a sophomore. In terms of community service hours, Chris worked with the American Red Cross when it came to TCHS each year, and also volunteered 100 hours with Itty Bitty T-Ball. He also volunteered time in the TCHS Library, tutored students in Canyon Lake and volunteered more than 100 hours in his mother’s clinic, in addition to attending conferences and seminars throughout the Southland for Yearbook and LOTT Leadership. Two of Chris’ most in-depth involvements at TCHS, Student Council and Mock Trial, have led to his decision to pursue the study of law in college. He has already been accepted to the University of California, Santa Barbara and looks forward to taking degree courses in English, Political Science and possibly Psychology. “By taking part in these courses of study, I feel UCSB’s rigorous curriculum will highly prepare me for the future of getting into graduate law school,” says Chris. “I will not only enroll in these courses because I believe they’ll benefit me in the long run, but also because I find these three topics fascinating. At the Scholarship Awards Night on May 24, Chris received scholarships from ASB, Better World, Canyon Lake Jr. Women’s Club, Comcast Leaders and Achievers, Lake Elsinore Elks, Pechanga, PTSA, Riverside Youth, Jostens Yearbook and UCSB. Chris was one of three elected valedictorians to speak at graduation on Wednesday, June 14, along with Alisha Heglund and Michelle Cleary, all of Canyon Lake. |
