News Briefs Mainstream luncheon Mainstream, the Canyon Lake Community Church group for adults age 55 and over, is holding its monthly luncheon April 19, at noon. The day’s theme will be “The Joy of Spring,” and a special program presented by naturalist Ron Hicks of the Santa Rosa Plateau will help usher in the season. Ron will discuss the interesting flora and fauna of the area as well as the variety of trails available to hikers and horseback riders alike. The cost of the catered luncheon is $7 and tickets can be purchased at the Mainstream window, located in the Patio of the church grounds. The luncheon will be held in Building C of the church, located at 30515 Railroad Canyon Road; attendees are asked to bring their own table service. For more information, please call Jean Lehman at 244-0430. Community Theatre scholarship The Canyon Lake Community Theatre has announced its annual scholarship program. Graduating students interested in applying for the scholarships must be a current Canyon Lake Community Theatre member and have participated during their high school years. Scholarship packets can be picked up at the Career Counseling Centers at Temescal Canyon High School, Elsinore High School and Lakeside High School. Awards will be presented at the Canyon Lake Community Theatre Spring Production, on Benefactor Night, May 18, as well as at each High Schools’ Scholarship Award Presentation events. Home Owners Club scholarships The Home Owners Club is giving away two $1,000 scholarships and invites graduating seniors to pick up application forms at their high school counseling center. Community service is a strong prerequisite for these scholarships. Deadline to submit application is May 15. ACT deadline The next nationwide ACT test date for college-bound high school students is Saturday, June 10. Students must register online or have their paper registrations postmarked by the end of the day May 5. Late registration postmark deadline is May 19 for an additional $18 fee. Students can receive registration information from their high school guidance counselors or they can register online at act.student.org. Celebrity Golf Tournament The Inland Empire Branch Arthritis Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held Friday, April 21, at the Menifee Lakes Country Club. Flag football The Southwest Family YMCA is taking sign-ups for its summer flag football season. Games are played on Saturdays in the Murrieta area, and will run from June 17 to August 19. The league is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grade, based on their grade in fall, 2006. Players are grouped by school and local area. The registration fee is $110 and includes a jersey and trophy. Financial assistance is available to families who qualify. Volunteer coaches are needed. Cardboard wanted Organizers for the Canyon Lake Middle School 8th Grade Dance are collecting large cardboard boxes and flat cardboard to make sets for the special end-of-year dance. They would also appreciate donations of door prizes, including gift cards to stores, movies, fast food restaurants and Starbucks. Cash donations would also be appreciated. Donate blood The Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties invites all healthy residents to celebrate National Donate Life Month by donating blood. Participants will receive a Blood Bank Baseball Stress Relief Squeezee. Donors will be eligible to win two tickets to the 118th Tournament of Roses Parade in January 2007, and possibly win the “Ride of a Lifetime” chance to become the first-ever blood donor to ride the Donate Life Rose Parade Float. Donors must be at least 17 years of age. Donating blood takes about one hour and may give someone else a lifetime. The date and location of the nearest blood drive is tomorrow, April 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Community Church, 34570 Monte Vista Rd. in Wildomar. See 'Aida' Canyon Lakers will want to order tickets for Elsinore High School’s production of “Aida,” that will be performed Thursday, April 20; Friday, April 21; Saturday, April 22; and again the following weekend starting Thursday, April 27; Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29 with a curtain time of 7 p.m. Leslie Vecchione directs the musical adaptation of the famous opera by Elton John and Tim Rice. Summer teachers wanted EF Educational Homestay Programs is currently looking for credentialed English, American Culture and History instructors to teach foreign exchange students for its summer program. The job starts July 5 and ends August 1. It is approximately four days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be approximately three study tours and teachers will be asked to accompany the students. The organization is also looking for volunteer host families to open their homes to foreign exchange students. It will be placing approximately 170 students ranging in age from 14 to 18 from France, Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Russia and Spain. Scholarship Pageant Debbie Miller, director for the Miss Canyon Lake Scholarship Pageant wants residents to know this year’s pageant will be held Saturday, August 5, at the Temescal Canyon High School Theater. The Pageant Committee will start taking applications in early May. Chamber cruise The 14th Annual Chamber Cruise sponsored by Canyon Lake Travel has been scheduled for October 18. The five-day Mexico cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Serenade Of The Seas will depart from San Diego, with ports of call in Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas; passengers can take advantage of the ship’s onboard entertainment and dining, spa and health club and other activities while at sea. Interior staterooms begin at $536 per person, with large ocean-view staterooms starting at $636 per person; $100 deposit per person is due no later than April 6. Community Outreach Ministry A non-profit organization, the Community Outreach Ministry in Wildomar assists needy individuals and families through emergency resources and referrals as well as providing free summer camp scholarships for needy children and training at-risk youth in creative arts. College tuition assistance The U.S. Commission for Scholastic Assistance wants to make parents and students aware that a variety of scholarships are available every year through private sector financial aid. These scholarships often go unused because parents and students don’t know what is available. Mom's group in Canyon Lake The organization MOPS (Mothers of Pre-schoolers) is for moms with children ages newborn to five years old. They meet on the first and third Tuesday of the month, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., at Canyon Lake Community Church. Enjoy breakfast with other moms, participate in fun crafts and listen to speakers. A group for mothers The MOMS Club invites all mothers to join their local chapter in Lake Elsinore/Wildomar. The MOMS Club is a national non-profit support group for mothers. A couple of Canyon Lake and Canyon Hills residents have joined the group and invite anyone who is an experienced runner or who wants to be a runner to join them for Saturday morning runs. The club provides all types of training. “If you want to run your first 5K or if you are training for your 10th marathon we have place for you,” says Greg Dale.
