Computer classes are still open

      Another series of computer classes is being offered at the Senior Center. Openings still are available in these clases, and those interested should sign up at the POA office. The classes include the following:
     • Internet and E-mail: This course is designed for both beginners and users who wish to expand their knowledge of what and how the Internet and e-mail can better serve them.
     Included will be a brief history and overview of the Internet/e-mail, selection of an Internet service provider and how to avoid pitfalls and problems. In addition, dial up vs. DSL vs. cable modem will be discussed as well as spam and virus protection.
     Surfing the web and sites such as eBay, Amazon, online banking and investing will be part of the course.
     Students will learn how to add files or digital photos and text attachments to e-mails as well as how to reply, forward messages. The class, taught by Bob Mericle, will be composed of four three-hour sessions on Tuesdays beginning March 14. Class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon and will cost $25. This class runs through April 4.
     • Writing with Word: This course will use MS Word and will involve some creative writing in addition to using many of Word’s features, such as inserting pictures in text, using columns in presenting text and other helpful features. Creative writing will show students how to use outlining in organizing their stories. The six three-hour sessions will be held on Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. beginning March 14 and continuing through April 18. Bob Mericle will be the instructor. Price is $35.
      • Basic Windows XP and More: This class is geared toward new users and users with limited experience who want to know more about what computers can do for them. Students will learn how to use the mouse, the keyboard, several application programs, including cutting, copying, pasting, saving files in folders, printing and, copying to a CD and or floppy disk. The six three-hour sessions will cost $35.
     One session, taught by Kary Lee Perry, will be held on Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning March 20 and continuing through April 24. A second class, taught by Diane Robinson, will be held on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, beginning April 12 and continuing through May 17.
     • Excel: This course is designed for both beginners and the experienced user who want to discover new ways to use the program in organizing data, both numerical and textural. Classes include getting familiar with the Excel Window, understanding the worksheet, organizing, formatting and entering information into the worksheet using autosum and autofil in preparing and exercising a worksheet.
     Emil Kreh will teach the six-session class on Thursdays, beginning March 23. The class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon through April 27. Cost is $35.
     • Digital scrapbooking: Those with digital cameras and who put their photos on their computers and keep them there forever will want to take advantage of a digital scrapbooking class. Students will learn how to easily create and print custom scrapbook pages, journals, mini-albums, family trees and other photo-based projects using their personal computers and any printer.
     Cropping, sizing and moving photos around to customized backgrounds will be featured.
     Classes will begin on Thursday, June 1, and continue through June 22. Taught by Joe Quinn, the four classes will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. and will cost $25.

Computer teachers needed
     The Senior Computer Center is looking for Instructors to conduct two different classes.
     A Digital Photography class would teach basics in downloading, editing, filing and printing photos from digital cameras. Programs available for use include Adobe Photoshop Elements, Windows Media and Picasa2.
     This class would most likely be presented in four three-hour sessions,though it could be scheduled to accommodate the instructor’s schedule or course plan.
     Another class would feature designing special occasion cards, such as greeting, anniversary, etc. Programs available for use are Printmaster and Microsoft Publisher. This class would most likely be presented in four three-hour sessions, though it also could be scheduled to accommodate the instructor’s schedule or course plan.
     To best serve the community, it would be desirable to have instructors who would be able to conduct classes on weekdays during daytime hours, such as 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or between 1 and 6 p.m.
