Annual Oktoberfest planned
     Save the date! The evening of October 28 is on the calendar for the Home Owners Club’s annual Oktoberfest. The event will be held at Holiday Harbor from 7 to 10 p.m. and will provide food, beverage and entertainment.
     Music will be presented by the Valley Winds Swing Band, which promises to play the traditional polkas associated with the festival. The CLAMS will be selling bratwurst, hot dogs and sauerkraut, while the Home Owners will sell beer, wine and hot cider and the Royal Court sodas and water. Dessert will be sold by the Twirlers.
     Canyon Lakers are encouraged to wear costumes to make the evening even more entertaining. Watch for more information as the date nears.

Open Studio Tour
     The Canyon Lake Art Association is sponsoring an Artists Open Studio Tour on Saturday and Sunday, November 4 and 5. Local artists have been invited to participate, opening their home studios or displaying their artwork at Blue Bird Hall.
     According to Christy Bruce, who is again coordinating the event, this is an opportunity for residents and their guests to spend a day viewing and purchasing works in watercolor, oil, acrylilcs, pastels, murals and sculptures.
     Maps including the artists’ names, locations and descriptions of artwork will be provided as of Monday, October 30.

A correction
     When ordering the Menifee Valley history book written by Elinor Martin and Betty Bouris (See September 23 issue of The Friday Flyer), checks should be made out to the Menifee Valley Historical Society, not Elsinore Valley Historical Society, as was written in the article. The newly released pictorial paperback book can be purchased for $20 by sending the order to Elinor Martin at 22475 Loch Lomond Dr., Canyon Lake, CA 92587.

Homes for Holiday Home Tour
     The Canyon Lake Woman’s Club invites homeowners who would like to have their homes in the annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, December 3, to contact the members listed below. The profit from this event goes into the club’s scholarship and philanthropic fund. For more information about entering your home in the tour, call Lorrie Cobb at 244-3816 or Rose Marie Hand at 244-6654. Organizers say there are “lots of elves available to help you decorate.”

TCHS Dance Camp
     Boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grade are invited to spend a day with the TCHS Titan Varsity Dance Team on Saturday, October 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the TCHS Dance Room and Small Gym. Beginners through advanced dancers will learn and perform a fun dance routine in front of family and friends, share lunch with other dancers and receive a TCHS Dance Team T-shirt.

Volunteer training
     The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve will begin its annual volunteer training program tomorrow, October 7. Weekly training sessions will include information on the plateau’s unique animal and plant life, geologic history, human history and how to effectively share this information with visitors.
     Upon completing training, volunteers will be prepared to participate in a number of opportunities including leading hikes for school children, conducting trail patrol, and staffing the Visitor Center information desk.
      The program is free and will be offered from 9:30 until noon. Training sessions will be held at the Visitor Center, located four miles west of I-15 on Clinton Keith Road near Murrieta. For more information contact Rob at (951) 677- 6951 ext.222 or rhicks@co.riverside.ca.us.

Elks hoop shoot
     The Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge will once again sponsor a “Hoop Shoot,” a national basketball free throw contest for local area youth ages 8 to 12. Boys will compete against boys and girls against girls, with each contestant attempting to make 25 free thrown baskets.

Passport processing
     Loreene Orgoralini of Can I Go, Too, Travel would like to remind Canyon Lakers that, after December 31, 2006, it will be required for anyone traveling outside the border of the United States to be in possession of a passport. “It’s a good idea to get one even if you have no immediate plans for travel,” she notes. “Passports are good for 10 years.”
     While passport processing is normally done at the post office, she notes representatives from the post office will be taking pictures and processing passports at the Country Garden Restaurant, 29000 Front St., in Old Town Temecula, on Wednesday, October 18, from 6 to 9 p.m., during a Cruise Expo. Checks only will be accepted – credit cards or cash will not be accepted during this event. Appointments are available by calling 949-350-3568.

Flag football
     The Southwest Family YMCA is taking sign-ups for its winter flag football season. Games are played on Saturdays in Murrieta, and will run from December 2 to February 17, 2007. The league is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through 8th grade. Players are grouped by school and local area. The registration fee is $110 and includes a jersey and trophy. Financial assistance is available to families who qualify. Volunteer coaches are needed. Landscape workshop
     EVMWD is offering a free basic landscaping class for homeowners to help save water, time and money at its district offices, located at 31315 Chaney Street in Lake Elsinore. The class will cover design, watering, soils and fertilizers and will feature a special bonus section as well. The Saturday, October 7, class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include California friendly and native plants. Swim show
     The Sun City Aquarians will “fly you to the moon” during their 38th annual Swim Show, today and tomorrow, October 6 and 7, at 10 a.m., from the Association’s Crystal Pool, located at Cherry Hills and Sun City Blvds. The extravaganza, entitled “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” is free to the public. A catered lunch will be served after the show in North Town Hall on Saturday only for $8, payable in advance. Growing roses
     The Temecula Valley Rose Society will meet on Thursday, October 19, at 10:15 a.m. at the Temecula Library, 41000 Country Center Drive. Guests and new members are warmly welcomed. There will be a pruning demonstration on October 21 at 10 a.m. at Rose Haven on Jedediah Smith and Cabrillo Rd. in Temecula. Parade of Lights
     Fall has just begun, but the Canyon Lake Yacht Club is encouraging residents and local clubs to put Saturday, December 9, on their calendars. That’s the date of this year’s Parade of Lights. “Mark your calendars, join the fun and participate in this wonderful community event,” says Commodore Steve Volkoff. “Decorate a boat, plan a party and enjoy.”

Holiday Boutique
     The Jr. Women’s Club will once again be hosting its annual Holiday Boutique, this year on Saturday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canyon Lake Lodge. According to organizers, the entire Lodge will be transformed into a Canyon Lake shopping mall where shoppers will be able to buy all kinds of items for home or for Christmas gift giving. Mainstream luncheon
     Mainstream, the Canyon Lake Community Church group for adults age 55 and over, is holding its monthly luncheon October 18, from noon to 2:30 p.m. and the program will feature guest speaker Juan Perez, Deputy Director in charge of Engineering and Planning for Riverside County, who will discuss the impact of the Audie Murphy project to the surrounding area as well as plans for relieving overcrowded streets and freeways.

     The Menifee Valley Medical Center Auxiliary is hosting a jewelry sale with Accessory Mania in the lobby of the Menifee Valley Medical Center, located at 28400 McCall Blvd., in Sun City Thursday, October 26, through Friday, October 27. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, with all proceeds benefiting the Menifee Valley Medical Center Auxiliary. Community Bible Study
     Community Bible Study (CBS) for 2006-07 began September 11 and ends May 14, 2007. The Temecula Valley CBS evening class is a place where couples, singles and families come and study God’s word together. CBS is a 30-year-old interdenominational Bible Study meeting once a week. The course of study this year is 1st and 2nd Corinthians. The class meets Mondays, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The host church is Mountain View Community Church (Formerly First Presbyterian Church), 33122 Grape St. in Wildomar. Chili Cook off
     The Lake Elsinore Elks are hosting a Chili Cook off contest at its lodge and are seeking teams to compete in the event. Sign ups must be made by October 13.
     Chili cooks will compete to see who prepares the best chili, and cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. Chili cooks will sell their completed product. In addition, hamburgers and other items will be on sale along with refreshments. Music, dancing and games will be included – fun for the entire family.

Thanking the troops
     Residents are invited to check out www.letssaythanks.com for a nifty way to show their appreciation to military personnel stationed abroad. Sponsored by Xerox, all a visitor to letssaythanks.com has to do is pick out a postcard, write a message of support and click “send.” Xerox will print the card and send it to a soldier who is currently serving in Iraq.
     It’s free and will brighten the day of dedicated heroes who are hundreds of miles away from everything they love. The postcards, depicting patriotic scenes and hometown images, were selected from a pool of entries from children across the country. After writing your personal message, the postcard is printed on the Xerox iGen3® Digital Production Press and mailed in a care package by military support organization Give2TheTroops®.

Grand opening event
     Canyon Hills Marketplace is inviting all schools in the Lake Elsinore area to participate in a fundraising event for the center’s grand opening on Saturday, October 21. Participating schools will sell the center’s coupon booklet for $5 and keep 100 percent of the proceeds. The booklet will be filled with special offers from the center’s merchants and will also include tickets for a free train ride, a free children’s identification kit, a free craft activity, a free spin art activity, a free balloon sculpture, a free face painting and a chance to win one of five $100 shopping sprees. The coupon booklets will be available for selling beginning today, September 22.

Free compost
     EVMWD, in conjunction with Synagrow Composting of California, Inc. will give away two free 50 pound bags of compost per car while supplies last on Saturday, October 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Compost can help prevent soil erosion, control weeds and create healthy soil. New concert season opens
     The Fine Arts Guild Board of Directors has announces that its 2006/2007 season will open in October. Kevin Mayse and his Big Band will usher in the fall with a “Journey through Jazz” to be played at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, in the Holiday Bay Room at the Lodge.
     The concert will take the audience through the world of jazz from its inception to the present day. This innovative musical art form is uniquely American and continues to evolve as musicians experiment with new ideas surrounding the concept. Born in America, jazz has achieved international influence and respect.
     Tickets for the concert are $17 are available at the POA and will also be sold at the door.

Attention Pinochle players

Tribute to Frank Sinatra
     “My Way – A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra” is now playing at the Welk Resort Theatre, where it will continue through November 12. The presentation honors the work of this great singer and actor with more than 50 unforgettable and timeless hits, including “My Way,” “It Was a Very Good Year,” “Witchcraft,” “That’s Life, “That Old Black Magic” and, of course, “New York, New York.” Four different performers will capture and communicate the music made over the years by Frank Sinatra.
     Prices range from $37 to $40 for performance only and $53 to $58 if a buffet is included. Matinee performances are on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1:45 p.m. Evening performances are held Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Mom’s group in Canyon Lake
     MOPS (Mother’s of Pre-Schoolers) is a group for mom’s with children newborn to age five, which meets twice a month at Canyon Lake Community Church. Come make friends with other moms, hear speakers and do crafts. Childcare is provided while the moms meet. Registration is $35 per trimester. Call Jasmine at 246-2911.

“Celebrate Recovery” group
      Cornerstone Community Church hosts a Recovery Group every Friday night in Wildomar. Celebrate Recovery is a Bible-based 12-step program for those with a desire to overcome the hurts, hang-ups and habits in their life. Help donate mammograms
     Visit a Breast Cancer site each day and a free mammogram will be donated to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to the site and click on “donating a mammogram” for free (pink window in the middle.)
      This doesn’t cost a thing since corporate sponsors and advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Free 4-1-1 for cell phones
      Some cell phone companies are charging us $1 or more for 4-1-1 information calls. Those who need to use the 4-1-1 number can simply dial 1-800 FREE-411 (1-800-373-3411) without incurring a charge except for the minutes required to make the call.

Tennis players wanted
      Senior women or younger interested in playing recreational doubles tennis at the Canyon Lake courts are invited to call Jeanne Nelson at 951-623-9339 to work out a time on Monday and Friday mornings.

Community Outreach Ministry
      A non-profit organization, the Community Outreach Ministry in Wildomar assists needy individuals and families through emergency resources and referrals as well as providing free summer camp scholarships for needy children and training at-risk youth in creative arts.
