This sleepy-looking polar bear was regularly found at Polar Bear Day in past years.

Polar Bears will ski Saturday

After being forced to cancel one of its most popular events last year because of lake closures, the Ski Club is again facing a dilemma. The group will go forward with its plans for its annual Polar Bear Day tomorrow, January 7, despite the fact that the City of Canyon Lake has posted signs warnng of possible contamination. (See article below.) According to Al Van Beenen, Ski Club veteran, everyone will be cautioned that they will be skiing at their own risk.
John and Kim Whitlow, who are coordinating the day’s events, say there will be hot chocolate, coffee, chili and other goodies for those brave enough to qualify as 2006 Polar Bears. Most importantly, there will be a roaring bonfire at Sunset Beach to warm those who take their turn around the Main Lake.
Skiers will be allowed to wear only a bathing suit and life vest – no wetsuits. Boats will be available to pull skiers from 9 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m. Some ski equipment will be available for those who do not have their own, and a safety boat will be on hand to quickly pull fallen skiers out of the 53-degree water.
According to Al Van, Canyon Lake’s traditional event has had as many as 80 to 90 skiers and almost as many spectators. Hundreds of people also cheer the “polar bears” on from their lakefront homes and decks.
Cost for the day’s event is $7 for the ski ride and the official 2006 patch or badge, or $20 if the participant wants a shirt as well. Others who want a Polar Bear shirt may purchase one for $15.
