City Council meeting
     January’s City Council meeting, originally scheduled for Wednesday, January 4, will take place one week later on January 11, at 7 p.m. in POA Board Room. As usual, the meeting will be televised on Comcast’s Channel 29.

Bingo
     There will be no Bingo Sunday, January 1.

Little League signups
     Canyon Lake Little League will be having sign ups for the 2006 season Saturday, January 7 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Town Center Conference Room.
     Parents must bring an original birth certificate, proof of residence (such as a utility bill or driver license with current address) and medical release information (child’s doctor and phone number). Players may also sign up online at canyonlakebaseball.com.
     For ages 5 to 8 the fee is $110; 9 and up is $130. Families with more than one child will be given a sibling discount. Tryouts will be held on January 21 and 28 at Gault Field.

Art show
     The Elsinore Woman’s Club is celebrating its Centennial Year in 2006. The first event of the year is an Art Show on January 7, at 710 W. Graham Ave. Lake Elsinore. It is open to all ages and mediums of visual art such as; watercolor painting, oil painting, sculpture and photography. There will be cash awards for best of show. Registration fee is $5 per entry maximum of three per person. Students are free. Registration and art drop off is January 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.
     Public viewing is January 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an artist reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served and viewers will get a chance to meet the artists. For information call Dottie Papin at 678-3968.

Hospital volunteer class
     Valley Health System will hold a New Volunteer Orientation Class at Menifee Valley Medical Center Thursday, January 5, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Main Conference Room. The minimum age to volunteer is 16. Registration is not required. For more information, call 679-8888, ext. 7254.

Bridge marathon
     The Woman’s Club is still accepting registration from couples and ladies for the Annual Bridge Marathon. All games are played as foursomes in the participants’ homes beginning next month and finishing by the end of May. An awards dessert will be held in June with prizes awarded in all divisions. Newcomers to Canyon Lake are encouraged to find a partner and take part. Entry fee is $10 per person and registration will be open through January 7. Child safety kits
     The Canyon Lake Police Department and Fire Station #60 are passing out Polly Klaas Foundation child safety kits to families in the community.
     “You only need to drop by the CLPD or the Fire Station for your free kit and, if you would like, the police will be happy to fingerprint your children,” says Tatiana Ziska, who has been instrumental in making the kits available to residents through her Bronze Award project with Girl Scouts.
     “I hope everybody will take advantage of these free kits and make sure every child in Canyon Lake will be fingerprinted and ID documented and safe for the rest of his or her life. The kits will be available through the month of December,” says Tatiana.

Elks scholarships, grants
     The Elks are once again offering $1,000 vocational grants to students planning to pursue technical courses above the high school level.
     Application forms are available at the local Elks Lodge, 33700 Mission Trail in Lake Elsinore or by visiting the Elks website at www.chea-elks.org.
     In addition, the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge is conducting a local scholarship competition for graduating seniors from four area schools as part of the Elks National Foundation’s 2006 Most Valuable Student Competition. Nationwide, the Elks have allocated over $2.2 million in scholarship awards for this year’s competition; in 2005, the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge awarded a total of $11,500 in scholarships, while the Elks Ladies, a Lodge Auxiliary, awarded an additional $4,500.
     Seniors from the following schools who are interested in applying should contact the school personnel indicated for applications: Julie Uhr, Career Center Technician at Elsinore High School; Brenda Welch, Career Center Clerk at Paloma Valley High School; Audrey Smith, Senior Career Center Clerk at Perris High School and Kathleen Schumm, Career Center Technician at Temescal Canyon High School.
     Completed applications must be submitted to the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge, located at 33700 Mission Trail, Wildomar, no later than January 13, 2006. For more information, please call 674-6804.

HEALTH SCREENINGS
     Canyon Lakers who’d like to find out whether or not they are at increased risk for stroke, aneurysm, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease or cancer will want to take advantage of health screenings that will be available here next week.
     HealthScreens, associated with the non-profit Gerontology Research Foundation, has been providing cutting edge testing since 1986 and has provided testing for Canyon Lake residents since 2002.
     Those who make appointments will have an opportunity to participate for the first time or to have their annual screening when HealthScreens returns to the City Multi-purpose Room on Wednesday, January 5. Give yourself a gift of good health in the New Year, say organizers.
     Screening choices include a stroke screen for $40, screenings for aneurysms for $35, heart for $35, circulation for $35, osteoporosis for $30, kidney for $35, liver for $35, gallbladder for $35 or thyroid for $35. Cholesterol and glucose blood screen will cost $25. The ultrasound used identifies plaque, fluid, stones, cysts, nodules, masses and more. No radiation is used.
     Canyon Lakers can order just one test if they prefer. Or a group of four tests costs $115, eight tests are $195 and nine test $215.

Seeking Tiger Cubs
     Canyon Lake Pack 346 is looking for 1st graders to join their High Adventure Tiger Cub den. Canyon Lake resident and Eagle Scout Tim Janes will lead this year’s high intensity scouting program that will feature such activities as canoeing, sailing, hiking, camping, fishing, golfing, water-skiing, archery and much more. Tigers will learn life long leadership skills and begin their journey to scouting’s highest honor, Eagle Scout. Please contact Tim Janes 244-5095 for more information.

Preschool story time
     A preschool story time is held at the Canyon Lake Library on Fridays at 11 a.m. A short craft time is held after the story reading.
     The Canyon Lake Library can be reached at 244-9181 and is open Mondays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hospital volunteers needed

Mom’s group in Canyon Lake
     The organization MOPS (Mothers of Pre-schoolers) is for moms with children ages newborn to five years old. They meet on the first and third Tuesday of the month, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., at Canyon Lake Community Church. Enjoy breakfast with other moms, participate in fun crafts and listen to speakers. Childcare is provided. Space is limited; dues are $35 per trimester. To register, call Jasmine at 246-2911.

A group for mothers
     The MOMS Club invites all mothers to join their local chapter in Lake Elsinore/Wildomar. The MOMS Club is a national non-profit support group for mothers. Organizers plan a wide range of activities including monthly meetings, park play days, special outings, age-specific playgroups and arts and crafts, to name a few. Childcare at CLMS
     Southwest Family YMCAs childcare and enrichment program is available at Canyon Lake Middle School to serve children attending the middle school and Cottonwood Elementary School. Hours of operation are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to provide before and after school care for kindergarten through 8th graders. Activities will include homework time, organized games, arts and crafts, sports and computer time. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families. Runners wanted
     San Diego Running Club has started a Temecula Valley chapter. A couple of Canyon Lake and Canyon Hills residents have joined the group and invite anyone who is an experienced runner or who wants to be a runner to join them for Saturday morning runs. The club provides all types of training. “If you want to run your first 5K or if you are training for your 10th marathon we have place for you,” says Greg Dale.
