News Briefs ADHD education meetings The ADHD Solutions Center in Murrieta offers parent support and education meetings for parents of children with attention problems. The meetings are designed to increase parents’ awareness of ADHD and to provide them with practical skills for managing their children’s behavior at home and at school. Part of each meeting will be devoted to sharing experiences and techniques, and parents will have the opportunity to meet and learn from other parents with similar families. The meetings are held monthly at the Murrieta Springs Conference Center, located in the Murrieta Springs Professional Park at 39755 Murrieta Hot Springs Road, Building C. The next meeting is Sunday, December 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. Reservations are not necessary; however, a nominal fee is collected at each meeting. Elks Scholarships The Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge is conducting a local scholarship competition for graduating seniors from four area schools as part of the Elks National Foundation’s 2006 Most Valuable Student Competition. Nationwide, the Elks have allocated over $2.2 million in scholarship awards for this year’s competition; in 2005, the Lake Elsinore Elks Lodge awarded a total of $11,500 in scholarships, while the Elks Ladies, a Lodge Auxiliary, awarded an additional $4,500. Seniors from the following schools who are interested in applying should contact the school personnel indicated for applications: Julie Uhr, Career Center Technician at Elsinore High School; Brenda Welch, Career Center Clerk at Paloma Valley High School; Audrey Smith, Senior Career Center Clerk at Perris High School and Kathleen Schumm, Career Center Technician at Temescal Canyon High School. Caregiver support Care Connexxus, Inc. Adult Day Services Center of Sun City/Menifee Valley, is a state designated Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Center specializing in the care of patients with dementia. Through a grant from the Riverside County Office on Aging, Care Connexxus offers free caregiver support group meetings to assist family members and others caring for dementia sufferers. Meetings are held at their facility, located at 29995 Evans Road, Sun City, the first and third Wednesday of each month from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Respite care is available during these meetings with a prior reservation. Meetings are also offered the third Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Lake Elsinore Senior Activity Center, located at 420 E. Lakeshore Drive, Lake Elsinore. Diabetes and stroke support groups Menifee Valley Medical Center is offering free support group meetings for patients living with diabetes or the effects of a stroke. The stroke support group is scheduled to meet Wednesday, November 30, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and will feature special guest speakers from Inland Valley Caregivers and Dr. Jaffer M.D., FAAN. The diabetes support group and class will be held Thursday, December 8, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Both groups meet at Menifee Valley Medical Center, located at 28400 McCall Blvd., Sun City. Bridge marathon The Woman’s Club is now accepting registration from couples and ladies for the Annual Bridge Marathon. The event encourages friendly competition in a social situation and all games are played as foursomes in the participants' homes beginning in January and finishing by the end of May. An awards dessert will be held in June with prizes awarded in all divisions. Newcomers to Canyon Lake are encouraged to find a partner and take part. Entry fee is $10 per person and registration will be open through January 7. Artist reception lngrid Wright will be showcased in an exhibit at Bella Gallery, 351G Railroad Canyon Road, Lake Elsinore through November 27. lngrid’s exhibit, entitled “Divine Inspiration,” will showcase her work in pastel painting, which has received local recognition and numerous awards and can be found in both corporate and private collections throughout California. Admission is free for both the reception and the exhibit. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; closed on Monday. Dinner to aid hurricane victims First Presbyterian Church of Wildomar invites the community to share in a soup and bread supper Sunday, November 20, at 6 p.m. at the church, located at 33122 Grape Street. Donations for the Praise and Thanksgiving Dinner in the amount of what might be spent on a Thanksgiving dinner or a nice meal out are requested, and a guest speaker from the John M. Perkins Foundation will present information on the homes the church is helping to build in Mississippi, through donations such as the dinner, to aid those displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Canyon Lake resident and Eagle Scout Tim Janes will lead this year’s high intensity scouting program that will feature such activities as canoeing, sailing, hiking, camping, fishing, golfing, water-skiing, archery and much more. Mom's group in Canyon Lake The organization MOPS (Mothers of Pre-schoolers) is for moms with children ages newborn to five years old. They meet on the first and third Tuesday of the month, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., at Canyon Lake Community Church. Enjoy breakfast with other moms, participate in fun crafts and listen to speakers. Bingo The Canyon Lake Lions and Lioness Clubs host Bingo the first and third Sundays of each month at 2 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room at City Hall. The next session is scheduled for December 4. All proceeds from bingo benefit charities such as the Loma Linda Lions Eye Foundation, Guide Dogs of the Desert, Canine Companions, Lion’s Hope (AIDS) and others. Power Wheelchairs Available The Miracle on Wheels Program makes electric power wheelchairs available to non-ambulatory seniors aged 65 and up free of charge for those who meet qualifications. The wheelchairs are provided for those unable to walk or propel a manual wheelchair; people of any age who are permanently disabled may also qualify for the program. A group for mothers The MOMS Club invites all mothers to join their local chapter in Lake Elsinore/Wildomar. The MOMS Club is a national non-profit support group for mothers. Organizers plan a wide range of activities including monthly meetings, park play days, special outings, age-specific playgroups and arts and crafts, to name a few. Childcare at CLMS Southwest Family YMCAs childcare and enrichment program is available at Canyon Lake Middle School to serve children attending the middle school and Cottonwood Elementary School. Activities will include homework time, organized games, arts and crafts, sports and computer time. Financial assistance is available to qualifying families. A couple of Canyon Lake and Canyon Hills residents have joined the group and invite anyone who is an experienced runner or who wants to be a runner to join them for Saturday morning runs. The club provides all types of training. “If you want to run your first 5K or if you are training for your 10th marathon we have place for you,” says Greg Dale.
