News Briefs Book donations needed Friends of the Canyon Lake Library are seeking donations for their upcoming book sale, scheduled for February 26. Donations can be taken to the library or to the home of Phyllis Lippen at 30300 Cinnamon Teal. Books, books on tape, CDs and DVDs will be accepted for donation; those deemed to be in excellent shape may be placed into circulation at the library. All others will be sold at the book sale, with proceeds used to purchase books and other items needed by the library. For more information, please contact Mary Munson at 244-1718. Chamber mixer Mark your calendars for January’s Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce mixer on Wednesday, January 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This month’s mixer will be hosted by Dale Erwin’s Sports Stop, located in the Towne Center at 31586 Railroad Canyon Road and will feature food, fun, drinks and prizes. Everyone is welcome to attend; for more information contact Lee Clark at the Chamber of Commerce at 244-6124. Date change for Jr. Olympics The Jr. Women's Club announces that the Jr. Olympics Super Bowl Saturday track competition planned for February 5 has been postponed to April 2. Club members want to make sure there is plenty of time to promote the event and find sponsors so it can be a truly well planned and fun event for the community’s children, as well as a successful fundraiser for the Newton family. Hear USC great, Vince Evans Canyon Lake football fans can attend a special community dinner engagement with Vince Evans, speaking on coming from behind and winning. The dinner is scheduled on Thursday, March 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Valencia Room at the National Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino. Reservations must be received by Monday, February 14. BRASS and Market Place/Educator CrossTalk, a division of Campus Crusade for Christ are sponsoring the event. Vince Evans was the MVP in the 1975 USC-Michigan Rose Bowl game where he led the Trojans to a 14-6 win. After he graduated in 1977, he was drafted into the NFL and played for the Chicago Bears and Oakland Raiders. Foster parent certification California Family Life Center, a non-profit private foster family agency provides, free of charge, all required training to become a certified foster parent. The training sessions are offered at their facility, located at 701 W. Esplanade, Suite F, San Jacinto. Orientation will be held on Tuesday, February 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the pre-certification session scheduled for Saturday, February 19, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 654-2352 for more information or to sign up for training. Daffodil Campaign The American Cancer Society is currently seeking volunteers to assist with its annual Daffodil Days campaign. Volunteers would work with local businesses, organizations, churches and community groups to obtain orders for daffodils, as well as collect orders for the “Gift of Hope,” anonymous gifts of flowers presented to cancer patients in local hospitals or other medical facilities. Proceeds from the campaign help support the Society's cancer research, services to patients and families and other cancer-related programs. 'Flight for Life' campaign January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month and as a special thank-you, all donors who give blood through January 31, will be eligible to win two round trip airline tickets to any Southwest Airlines destination. Donors should be at least 17 years old, free of infections and illness, weigh at least 110 pounds and not be at risk for hepatitis or AIDS. Spring concert The Fine Arts Guild will present 'Frank Sinatra' and 'Dean Martin' in 'Portrait of a Chairman' at its Spring concert at the Lodge Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature impersonators of the 'Chairman of the Board' and 'Dino' in the same starring roles made famous in their Las Vegas act. This audience inter-active show will be accompanied by the Jon Laskin Band. Presented as a tribute to these two legendary singers, the concert will reprise melodies and memories familiar to all. Tickets are $15 at the POA. Itty Bitty T-Ball This weekend, January 22 and 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., sign ups for Itty Bitty T-Ball’s 2005 season will be taking place at the Lake Elsinore Wal-Mart. Those taking part must be aged 3 and up and the cost is $65 for the season, while sponsors advise that children must be ready to play baseball to register. All proceeds will go to the Temescal Canyon High School baseball teams and games will be played on Sundays. For additional information, parents are asked to call Jackie Bruccheri at 245-2604. Trip to San Manuel Casino The Canyon Lake Lioness Club is once again having a bus trip to San Manuel Casino on Wednesday, February 9. According to reports, the casino has recently been completely remodeled and is beautiful, with several restaurants and new facilities. The donation for this trip is only $10, which will be used by the Lioness for their philanthropic endeavors. The bus will leave the Lodge parking lot promptly at 8:30 a.m., arriving at San Manuel at approximately 10 a.m. The bus will leave the casino at 2 p.m. for the return trip. HIV Planning Council The Inland Empire HIV Planning Council is seeking willing citizen members to join their work as a policy making body for HIV/AIDS care and treatment. Storytime On January 28, the popular Storytime will resume at the Canyon Lake Library and will continue on Fridays through March 18 at 10:30 a.m. Children 3 to 5 years old are invited to join in on the fun and listen to stories and participate in rhymes and songs with a social time for coloring or crafts following the stories. |
