School News Elsinore Middle School Students enrolled in Elsinore Middle School, especially in GEMS programs, are reminded that Open Enrollment for intra-district transfers started on Friday, January 10, and runs through, Friday, February 10. Applications for the transfers should be available at the district office at 545 Chaney Street in Lake Elsinore. Because of rapid growth in the district, officials point out it may not be possible to approve some transfers and several schools are now closed to any new transfer requests. For the GEMS applications for 2005-06 year, those applications will be available starting March 1. March 3 the school will hold its annual Science Fair and winners will advance to the District Science Fair scheduled for March 10 at David A. Brown Middle School in Wildomar. Canyon Lake Middle School On Saturday, February 26, Canyon Lake Middle School in Canyon Hills will host the Inland Valley Debate League competition. Last year, instructor Diane Parker and the Canyon Lake Cougars team introduced many of the students to how debating works. As part of that program, a new international debate exchange program has been announced by the Claremont Colleges National Debate Outreach program. The program director, Kate Shuster announces the new partnership will be with the English-Speaking Union’s London Debate Challenge. the partnership will join the world’s two largest middle school debate outreach programs to facilitate international, cultural and educational exchange between teachers and students in Southern California and their counterparts in London. Claremont’s program, is the the largest in the United States in middle schools, and serves more than 5,000 in 100 schools across Southern California. According to Kate, this next year the Inland Valley Debate league and the LDC will exchange students and teachers for seven to 10 day stays, both here and in London. It is hoped the first exchange can be held at the end of June, 2005 with two or three teams and three to five adults would travel from Southern California to London to participate in the LDC’s final championship tournament. Then the London counterparts would begin visiting schools and homes around the end of October and beginning of November, 2005 in Southern California. For more information about this exchange, contact Diane Parker at Canyon Lake Middle School or Kate Shuster at kate.shuster@claremontmckenna.edu. When the Canyon Lake Cougars participated in the 3rd “Coyote Classic” tournament on Thursday, December 4, at Canyon Hills, 209 students from 14 middle schools participated.
