No one wanted to see it happen, but, after 16 straight wins, the Temescal Canyon Varsity Basketball team finally gave one up on Monday, January 17, during the Martin Luther King Inland Classic at Riverside King High School.
Ranked number one in CIF-Southern Section Division 1A, the Titans had no reason to feel ashamed about their loss (55-62) to the first ranked Santa Margarita Eagles (CIF SS Division IIIAA) during non-league play. And as Coach Mark Williams pointed out, “I had no notion we were going to go undefeated this year, but if you have to lose, they were a good team to do it against.”
The team was playing without one of its starters, Shane Hanson, because of his ejection during the Temecula Valley game last Friday.
So far this season, the team was undefeated during three December tournaments and its first four games of the season against Alta Loma, Elsinore, Murrieta Valley and Temecula Valley. On Wednesday night, Temescal defeated Vista Murrieta 66-48, making the team 3-0 in Southwestern League and 17-1 overall.
Tonight, however, the Titans will play a home game against their biggest league rival, Rancho Verde, who, as of January 18, had an impressive record of 17-3. Canyon Lakers are invited to wear blue and attend the game, which will begin at 6 p.m. in the Thunderdome.
Several Canyon Lake players have dominated the stats the season, beginning with Matt Nunez, who is ranked number one in Southwestern League with an average of 23.3 points per game and 373 points overall as of January 18. Matt was named The Californian “Athlete of the Week” on January 11. The 6-foot-5 guard has scored 30 or more points five times so far this season, but also averages 3.1 assist per game.
Though he was sidelined due to an injury earlier in the season and also missed last Monday’s game against Santa Margarita, Shane Hanson is also on the Valley Leaders’ list with an average of 12.4 points per game. Rocky Hampton is close behind with 11.2. Rounding out the list of Titan leaders in scoring are Brian Byrd with 13.9 and Maurice Clark with 8.0.
In rebounds, 6-foot-9 center Rocky is number four on the Valley Leaders list with an average of 9.3, while Matt has an average of 7.4 and Noah Petrich averages 6.2. Jordan Bowman tops the Valley Leaders’ assists list with an average of 6.5, while Matt joins him on the list with 3.3. Bryan and Matt have also contributed to their team’s win column with 13 and 11 three-point goals, respectively.
