Reporter The sign at the entrance to Canyon Lake reads “Entering Golf Cart Community.” Once inside, though, “Entering Golf Cart Culture” seems more appropriate. Golf carts are everywhere, and those operating them aren’t necessarily golfers. Whether running to the market, having brunch at the Lodge on Sunday, visiting friends or going to the beach, Canyon Lakers are apt to choose a golf cart as their primary mode of transportation. As with any vehicle, there are always those who eschew the norm and have the desire to create a one-of-a-kind ride, one that stands out from the crowd and embodies the driver’s personality. Golf carts are no exception to this rule, as evidenced by the growing number of carts now seen with wild custom paint, suspension modifications, polished aluminum wheels and other car-like upgrades – some even sport stereo systems complete with CD changers and high-end speakers. Now there’s a way for these like-minded golf cart enthusiasts to get together. Street Carts of Canyon Lake was recently sanctioned by the Property Owners Association as the community’s newest club. But Street Carts of Canyon Lake is more than just a way for custom cart owners to show off their rides. Formed as a non-profit organization, the aim of the club is to host fun events while raising money for local families in need. Club founder and President, Mike Shroyer, first toyed with the idea of bringing together custom cart owners a few years ago when he put together, with the help of Prestige Golf Carts, Canyon Lake’s first-ever golf cart rally. The event was a fundraiser to benefit the Red Cross after the 9/11 attacks. More than 25 carts participated in the “show and shine” competition, which was held in the parking lot at the Lodge, and vied for trophies, including “Best in Show.” As owner of Good Time Entertainment, Mike often donates his DJ services for fundraisers and when he purchased his own custom golf cart in October of last year, he knew there had to be a way to bring his business and his new hobby together for the greater good. The idea behind the club struck him while watching one of his favorite shows, ABC’s “Extreme Home Makeover,” where home improvement professionals donate their services to help renovate the home of a family in need. Street Carts of Canyon Lake will have a similar tone, as each of the events will benefit a different worthy cause. Mike, who also serves the group as event chairman, plans to hold several fun activities throughout the year centered around golf carts, including drive-in movie nights, poker runs and rallies in the spring and summer months. During the holidays, plans for a golf cart Parade of Lights are in the works, as well as a club Christmas party that will include caroling from the carts. Membership to Street Carts of Canyon Lake is open to anyone with a golf cart and a desire to meet new friends while helping others less fortunate. Membership dues are $20 for the year and applications are currently being accepted; they can be picked up at AA Great American Golf, Prestige Golf Carts or by contacting Mike Shroyer directly at 244-6461. Mike stresses that membership is not limited to customized carts – no one will be turned away, provided they have a current permit and registration and are in good standing with the POA. |
