Mandatory dialing of new area code begins soon The “permissive dialing” period began July 17 and will end this month. Mandatory dialing of the 951 area code will begin October 30. The permissive dialing period gave customers time to get acquainted with the new area code. Until October 30, calls will be completed even if one forgets to dial the new area code. After that date customers will be required to dial 951 when placing calls to that area. Customers should reprogram any automatic dialing equipment they have, such as fax machines, modems and wireless phones. (Keep in mind that these new dialing instructions apply to calls made to and from wireless phones as well). • Your seven-digit phone number is not changing. • Rates are not changing. • Your local calling area is not changing. A local call is still a local call; a toll call is still a toll call. • What used to be a local call will remain a local call, although you may have to dial the area code first. • Calls to 911 and 411 are not changing–you will continue to dial three digits only. • If you are dialing from the 951 area code to a number within the 951 area code you do not need to dial the area code to place a call. |
