Photo of the week photographer Kim Palaferri is an out-of-towner who often visits her parents at their home on Longhorn Dr., next to the Campground, where she took this picture last year just before the fireworks show began on Skipper's Island (seen in the center right side of the photo). Like thousands of Canyon Lakers and their guests who sit on boats, decks and shores around the Lake to watch the fireworks, Kim was captivated by the lights of the boats and their reflection on the water in the gathering darkness, as well as the gas torches (at left) that lent a "Pirates of the Caribbean" flare to the warm night.
Have a safe, fun-filled holiday! City Connection: Water after dark The City of Canyon Lake and Mayor Carl Armbrust would like to remind residents they can save water this summer by only watering after dusk. Watering after the sun is setting helps to prevent evaporation and allow all of the water to seep into the soil for use by plants and grass. In addition, the typical household only needs to water four times a week, 15 minutes a day.

Commuter Connection This new feature, “Commuter Connection,” is an opportunity for commuters to list their name and job destination in hopes of finding other Canyon Lake residents headed to the same destination. With rising gas prices, it makes sense to share the costs with one or two other people.
Movie Reviews by Reel People: 'Wanted' It’s a choice you have to make. You can remain ordinary, pathetic, beat-down, through a miserable existence, like sheep herded by fate. Or, you can take control of your own destiny and not see this shameful excuse for an action thriller. Choose wisely because you could lose $9 and two hours of your life you’ll never get back.
Miller Time: Miller family mourns fat cat that was top dog If you read my column, then you know a lot about my family, especially about the four-legged members of the Miller clan we have loved and lost over the years – Max, our 16-year-old Schnauzer who was truly man’s best friend; mischievous Ethel, our 13-year-old Schnauzer who was the brainy ring leader of the “Lucy and Ethel” sibling duo; and now, Roxie, our 25-pound, lovable Scottish Fold cat with a bigger than life personality, enormous yellow eyes, tiny ears, short legs, a big heart and a tiny brain.

Letter: Community garden In response to the proposal for a community garden at Sierra Park East, we are strongly opposed. The cost not to exceed $52,000 for 40 plots is $1,300 per plot. Do we want to subsidize 40 families or individuals $1,300 to grow some vegetables, fruits and flowers?
Letter: Need a blog The Setback Committee got it right. It was necessary to enforce the six-foot setback because people abused it for selfish and economic reasons. Thanks, Mr. McCoy, for bringing it up and thank you to the committee for such a fine job.

Although the proposed rule does not address all forms of blight within our community, it is an important first step to address what some feel is a clear infringement of the basic rights of property ownership.

In fact, homeowners who purchased their residence during the recent real estate boom bear the greatest risk of finding themselves “upside down” in their mortgage - a situation where they owe more than the current value of the house.

From the Director's Chair: Director sings the praises of his hometown I have been fortunate enough to call Canyon Lake home since 1977 and could not be more proud of this community than I am now. We recently lost a well-respected member of our community, Cathy Zaitz, and it amazes me how this community comes together to embrace and support families in need. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Zaitz family at this time.
